Intel Core i3-10100 vs Intel Core i5-10400F vs Intel Core i3-10100F
Intel Core i3-10100► remove from comparison
The Intel Core i3-10100 is a four-core desktop processor based on the Comet Lake S architecture. The processor clocks at 3.6 - 4.3 GHz and can process up to 8 threads simultaneously. The Intel Core i3-10100 is manufactured in the improved 14nm process (14nm++). Compared to the older i3-9100 (Comet Lake-S), the 10100 offers a 100 MHz higher turbo clock, multithreading and support for faster DDR4-2666 memory.
The performance should be only slightly above the Core i3-9100 in the entry level for desktop CPUs. Thus the performance is sufficient for office and undemanding gaming.
The Intel Core i3-10100 is a processor with a rather slow entry level integrated graphics unit (Intel UHD Graphics 630).
Intel puts the Thermal Design Power (TDP) at 65 watts. This means there is no need for large cooling systems, which also allows installation in very compact housings.
Intel Core i5-10400F► remove from comparison
The Intel Core i5-10400F is a mid-range processor for desktops with six cores based on the Comet Lake architecture (CML-S, 4th generation of Skylake). The processor clocks at between 2.9 and 4.3 GHz and can execute up to 12 threads simultaneously thanks to Hyper-Threading.
The processor is still manufactured on the old 14nm (14nm++) process.
The Comet Lake architecture is similar to Coffee Lake and offers the same features and is produced in the same 14nm process. Other than the improved clock rates, the memory controller now also supports faster DDR4-2666 RAM. More information on Comet Lake and all the models and articles on it can be found here.
Thanks to the high clock speeds (and possible TDP settings with most mainboards), the Core i5-10400F offers a good gaming performance and thanks to the 6 cores also a good application performance.
The CPUs with an "F" suffix do not feature an integrated graphics adapter. The Intel UHD Graphics 630 iGPU is deactivated (e.g., to use chips with defective GPUs) and can not be used in the 10400F.
Intel specifies the TDP at 65 Watts (PL1) but under full load up to 134 Watt are consumed (PL2) for up to 28 seconds (Tau).
Intel Core i3-10100F► remove from comparison
The Intel Core i3-10100F is an entry level quad-core processor for desktop PCs based on the Comet Lake-S architecture. It offers four cores clocked at 3.6 - 4.3 GHz with HyperThreading / SMT support (8 threads). The CPU is still manufactured in 14nm++ and does not feature an integrated graphics card. Compared to the older Coffee Lake Core i3-9100F, the i3-10100F offers a 100 MHz higher Boost speed, HyperThreading and support for faster DDR4 memory (2666 MHz).
The performance should be similar to the older i3-9100F and therefore situated in the lower end of desktop processors. That means it offers enough performance for office tasks and low end gaming.
Intel specifies the CPU with a TDP of 65 Watt. For desktops that means that the processor won't need big cooling solutions and can be used in small cases.
