Sony’s upcoming Xperia XZ4 may just be the company's most promising flagship release in recent history. The company is set to cram in a number of features into the flagship, including a triple rear camera setup, and a novel 21:9 display aspect ratio. We’ve been very excited about the launch of the phone but new information manages to douse the flames of our expectations, if only by a bit.
According to Sony, there will likely be no Xperia XZ4 Compact. The company’s VP of marketing, Don Mesa, in an interview with Digital Trends, claimed that the company could finally be ditching the Xperia Compact phones, citing that users want more “surface area for their content”.
While that isn’t exactly false—or phones wouldn’t have seen a big jump in display sizes over the past three years—the Xperia Compact phones filled a niche in the market: for people who wanted a premium phone in a relatively small package. The Xperia XZ Compact phones may not have been the best flagships on the market, but they were the only flagships with display sizes under 5.5-inch. It will be sad to see Sony discontinue the line.
Meanwhile, there’s a chance we also don’t get a 3.5mm headphone jack on the XZ4 at all. Word on the grapevine has always been iffy on the subject, but a new report showing what appears to be the XZ4’s case has the headphone jack as non-existent, as there is no hole for it on the case. Of course, cases aren’t the most reliable sources of information but the XZ4 will be unveiled next month at MWC, and most rumors surfacing now are to be taken seriously. Let’s just say we would be surprised—pleasantly so, though—to see a jack on the Xperia XZ4.
