Rumor | Xiaomi strikes a new deal with TCL CSOT to bring advanced LTPO screens to more mid-range smartphones
High-end Android smartphone fans might have enjoyed launch events that tout new and cutting-edge screen types that can drop their refresh rates from their maximum freqeuncies (often 120Hz) down to as little as 1Hz if necessary to conserve battery life. Now, the tipster Digital Chat Station hints that at least one OEM might be ready to upgrade next-gen devices from more affordable segments to the same technology.
The panels imbued with these high-end specs are allegedly sourced from China Star Optoelectronics (or CSOT), a TCL subsidiary that does indeed specialize in making fancy panels for the mobile device market. It is apparently now selling LTPO displays with up-to-date dynamic refresh rate technology for mid-range smartphones.
This report has led to speculation that the client in question here is Xiaomi, and that is it nearly ready to start selling sub-flagship handsets with 1-120Hz LTPO displays. These panels are also tipped as capable of DC dimming, minimal PWM or both. Then again, there are no signs of these putative next-gen bargain phones hitting the market any time soon.
