Xiaomi confirms MIUI 12.5 rollout plans for over a dozen devices
Xiaomi has announced plans to release MIUI 12.5 to its devices in China. Earlier this year, the company revealed that it would begin upgrading devices globally sometime during this quarter, but it would not commit itself to a more specific timeframe. It is worth stressing that Xiaomi runs devices it sells in China on a different development branch from those it sells elsewhere, so the MIUI 12.5 release schedule only applies to Chinese handsets.
However, it does indicate when Xiaomi will start issuing MIUI 12.5 globally. According to the announcement, MIUI 12.5 should reach the Mi 9 SE, Mi 10 and three other devices by April 30. Typically, MIUI's Chinese branch receives OS updates before others do, with the European, Indian and global branches following at least a few weeks behind. Hence, it seems likely the 'Q2 2021' start date for its global MIUI 12.5 release schedule will drift into May 2021.
Incidentally, Xiaomi will commence the second MIUI 12.5 phase in China from the end of May. By contrast, the second global phase is not due to begin until late Q2 2021 for devices like the POCO F2 Pro, Mi Note 10 and the Redmi Note 9 Pro, among others. If Xiaomi plans to start its second MIUI 12.5 rollout in late May for Chinese devices, then we suspect that the global equivalents will be left waiting until June 2021, instead.
