Reviews for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
Neck and neck. One year after the launch of the predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi Mix, the Chinese manufacturer has now released a new model. Not much has changed on the outside, apart from the device shrinking slightly. While other Asian manufacturers are fighting for customers with very competitive prices, Xiaomi displays confidence in its pricing, thereby placing its focus on quality and design.

There are other negatives. It doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack, there’s no IP68 water-resistance, there’s no microSD slot (only two slots for nano SIMs), and the ceramic finish attracts fingerprints. Plus, if I’m being truly finickity, the camera housing protrudes a little. Nevertheless, if you can forgive these foibles and surmount that Chinese interface, then you will own an object of true beauty.

There’s only going be a small subset of customers for this device outside of the few countries where it’s officially sold. That’s really a shame because I believe that this was one of the best devices of 2017 and still remains a solid buy in 2018. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is coming soon, but it’s only a relatively small change and I think you could save the money and pick up the Mi Mix 2 and be just as happy.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is a strikingly designed smartphone for a cut of the price compared to its flagship competitors. In most departments it more than gives them a run for their money, too. It's powerful, that ultra-trim bezel is well considered and gives the device a look like no other, while the 18:9 ratio screen is ideal for one-handed use.

The Mi MIX 2 is one of those handsets that you will probably never see another soul using if you live outside of Asia. If you are someone who likes having something unique, this is probably the handset for you. The device starts at $465 and can go a little higher if you choose to opt for more RAM and internal storage space. But considering that Samsung and LG are charging around $700 and over for their flagships, this isn't a bad price at all for what you get.

The Mi 6 was already doing the bare minimum for budget flagships, and the same missing features on a pricier Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 places a huge emphasis on its bezel-less display, which in itself, isn't as feature-filled as its competition. However, it is still the most affordable bezel-less experience without the insane price tags as of late, paired with great performance returns. If you still want to experience using a bezel-less or edge-to-edge flagship smartphone before diving into the deep, pricey end with all the bells and whistles, the Mi MIX 2 is an excellent place to begin for S$699.

The Mi Mix 2 is a sleek looking flagship smartphone from Xiaomi. The phone features a design that is dominated by the immersive display and impressed with the edge-to-edge experience. Well, like any other device, the phone has its pros and cons. We witness a frequent call drop on both incoming and outgoing calls even though we have the strongest network in our area. The front camera is located at the unusual location which makes it difficult to capture good selfies unless you turn the phone by 180-degrees. It looks great and proves to be a winner when it comes to performance. If you can live with the Mi Mix 2’s average camera and Xiaomi’s own MIUI 9, then it is certainly a compelling flagship.

For the money -- less than half the price of an iPhone X and two-thirds the price of a Samsung Galaxy S8 -- Xiaomi's Mi Mix 2 is a stunning smartphone. It looks and feels fantastic, performs well and represents a near-miracle of packaging. And on top of all that, you'll have a phone that none of your friends or colleagues have.

It might seem alien at first, but there's little need to be sceptical: the Mi Mix 2 wraps all the home comforts of an Android flagship in an altogether more affordable device, without compromising the design. It's a great sign of the future to come from this maker.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this review, the Mi Mix 2 is a work of art. The design of the handset is straight up gorgeous and photos don’t do justice to just how beautiful it looks in real life. Once you have seen the Mi Mix 2 in real life, there’s no way you can ignore it. The handset is not without its own demerits which includes the 12MP primary camera being a disappointment and the weird position of the 5MP front camera. None of that, however, changes the fact that the Mi Mix 2 is an excellent smartphone. For its price of Rs 35,999, the handset rivals the incredibly popular OnePlus 5 in India which it handily beats in the design and build department.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is likely the most stylish smartphone with the full-screen display. It has good battery timings whereas it doesn’t have microSD card slot, no headset jack and the phone is not water-resistant. The device is a little bit expensive because Xiaomi is a new company in Pakistan so the audience will take time to spend that much money on Xiaomi device.

There’s nothing bad here, so don’t take that the wrong way. But when you’re used to Samsung and Google’s way of handling Android, Xiaomi’s skin almost feels like a completely different operating system. I’m still not 100% used to it after a few weeks of playing with it, and I think most people in my situation would feel the same.

As Xiaomi marches ahead towards dominating smartphone sales in India, it can’t just count on the Redmi series to be its cash cow. Capturing the midrange and premium smartphone market with larger margins is the bigger play here. In spite of the me-too route, Xiaomi is smartly launching devices that have a gimmick to offer. The Mi A1 comes with stock Android, the Mi Mix 2 ships with almost no bezels. By differentiating themselves from the competition, the company hopes to offer a unique proposition.

Xiaomi has tasted one success after another over the past 12-18 months, and the company looks set to dethrone Samsung as the number one player by volume in India’s smartphone market. This has largely been possible because of its budget Redmi offerings, but recently, we’ve seen the company looking to experiment with other price bands and product segments with the likes of the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the recently launched Redmi Y1 series.

Which, by and large, all sounds great, so surely the Mi Mix 2 is as pricey as its other 18:9 screen, trim bezel, high-powered flagship competitors? Well, no, not even nearly. With its €499 asking price in Europe - well, Spain for the time being, which is where the handset launches on 11 November 2017 (hopefully with more European nations to follow) - it's a lot, lot more affordable than the competition. It even has the potential to slap about OnePlus with its imminent 5T launch. Changing times.

To sum up, the smartphone comes loaded with some premium design along with top-of-the-line performance and battery comfortably last a day. However, both the cameras are average and there is no scaling option. To conclude, the phone can be considered as a good option if you fancy bezel-less display with some premium look, but overall, it faces a stiff competition with the likes of OnePlus 5, LG G6, and more.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is an elite smartphone that offers a combination of cutting-edge performance, incredible bezel-less design and true premium feel in every way. In addition to some of the slight objections that apply to the Chinese version of the MIUI user interface, the average camera and slip in the hands of this device have nothing to complain about. We were really pleased with this smartphone in the world.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 carries on the legacy of its predecessor. It has a tall screen, minuscule bezels at three sides and has a ceramic back that makes the phone look more premium. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is not exactly an easy phone to recommend. Or, at least not universally applicable as such. There’s no doubt Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 delivers on the premium experience. Yes, the design is different and the display excellent. But that’s never enough. It’s definitely a phone worth considering, if you don’t really care for dual rear cameras. But nonetheless, Xiaomi will have a tough time convincing customers to pick this one from the several other mid-range flagships in the market.

The Mi Mix 2 is Xiaomi’s best flagship smartphone offering yet. It almost is an all-rounder if you don’t factor in its abnormal low light camera performance. With that said, it performs equally good as the OnePlus 5 if not better on some fronts (just that it does not come with a Portrait mode).

Xiaomi became the first to launch a truly full screen display smartphone in India with Mi MIX 2, a gorgeous evolution of Mi MIX, the revolutionary concept phone unveiled a year ago.

Xiaomi has launched its high-end flagship phone with a near bezel-less screen, the Mi Mix 2, in India at a hefty price tag of Rs 35,999. Successor to last year's concept phone Mi Mix, the Mi Mix 2, is notably Xiaomi's most expensive phone in India to date. Considering what it brings to the table, however, it takes no genius to ascertain that the Mi Mix 2 ought to be an expensive phone. In line with current-generation high-end flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the LG V30 and even Apple's soon-to-be available iPhone X.

The Mix 2 has evolved from a crazy concept phone to a usable flagship phone. The all-screen front will ensure it stands out in the crowd. The ceramic back and the 18K-carat golden rim around the camera will ensure the phone looks premium. The Snapdragon 835 paired to 6GB of RAM will ensure you have a snappy experience throughout. The support for global LTE bands ensures one can use the Mix 2 no matter where they reside (you can purchase it from e-retailers like Gearbest and Aliexpress if you are not from China or India). If you can live with some obvious shortcomings in MIUI 9 and an average camera (by modern flagship standards), the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has a lot to offer for ~$550 even after the vanity factor of bezel-less display wears off in the near future. For now, Xiaomi has blended all that style with a great deal of substance.

Much like a concept car which has its boldest, but ultimately unconventional aspects toned down before hitting the assembly line, the Mi Mix served as the inspiration for what is ultimately a more usable, but still unique device in the Mi Mix 2. The software is perhaps a bit rough around the edges if you’re buying one for use outside of China, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the many upsides it has to offer. The Mi Mix 2 starts at around $600, depending on where you find it, but GearBest (which provided our review unit) currently has it for $569.99.

So what’s our final verdict? Of the 7 factors we mentioned at the start of the post, the Mi Mix 2 passes most of them with flying colors, especially with Design (Build), Power, Display, and Battery Life. The only real issues are with the camera and the software (which can be remedied if you exert effort).

All in all, the main problem the Mi Mix 2 is that the things its predecessor did differently are now standard in the smartphone world. The original Mi Mix was co-opted by the Essential Phone, among others, and we are seeing a move toward the phone’s 2:1 aspect ratio (well, 17:9 but close enough), along with minimal bezel displays, across the industry.

That said, a bezel-less display at just CNY3,299 (~S$681.23) is too affordable to ignore. The Mi MIX 2's design is appealing, and Xiaomi paid plenty of attention to maximizing the display's utility. We'd have a better assessment when we try the phone within the confines of our sunny shores, but until then, the Mi MIX 2 is what it is - innovative design at an accessible price.

At the moment, it still remains to be seen if the Mi Mix 2 will ever be brought into Malaysia officially. Then again, considering the fact that the device supports 43 different bands, we reckon the Mi Mix 2 won’t just be a China-only product. Hopefully, the Mi Mix 2 will be officially sold in Malaysia in the near future; if priced right, it may be a winner for Xiaomi.

Model: The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 brings a touch of style and class to affordable flagship smartphones. It was the phone that inspired Samsung, LG, and Apple to feature 18:9 full-screen displays in their latest flagships. Thin-bezel displays are already encouraging people to upgrade to new and expensive smartphones with narrow bezels. Producing a successor to that revolutionary handset was a tough job for Xiaomi, but in the Mi Mix 2 it has returned a gorgeous flagship that is more manageable in the hand and significantly faster. It also features the same primary camera as the company’s Mi6, which is a good thing. The Mi Mix 2 is even better-looking than the original. The best design change is the reduced overall size. It is dropped to 7 mm on its height and 6 mm on its width and has even shaved off a little round its waist and is just 7.7 mm thick now. Unfortunately, this means there is now a camera bump, which is more apparent thanks to its gold surround. Powering the Mi MIX 2 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset along with 6 GB of RAM and a graceful 128 GB of internal storage. With 6 GB of RAM, multitasking is a breeze on the Mi MIX 2. The phone can effortlessly keep two heavy games and a few social media apps in the RAM.
There is a 12 MP Sony IMX386 sensor doing duties for the rear camera. It can capture 4K videos and is aided by a 4-axis optical image stabilization unit, phase detection autofocus and some software trickery for low light enhancement. Despite lacking a dual camera setup, it is confirmed that the camera captures some impressive details. There is also a 5MP camera on the front but it is awkwardly placed at the bottom right. A user will need to turn the Mi Mix 2 upside down to use it properly. Xiaomi does not provide any USB-C headphones in the box, but the user gets a USB-C to 3.5 mm audio adaptor. Another thing notably missing here is a 3.5 mm headphone jack. This is the first Xiaomi phone seen not to include this port, and may well be a sign of things to come for the company. It is a trend started in late 2016 with the iPhone 7, causing users to resort to the USB-C port or a pair of wireless earphones for audio. Connectivity-wise the only thing missing is an IR blaster. So the user gets NFC and a fingerprint scanner, which is necessary for making mobile payments, fast Wi-Fi, GPS and GLONASS, OTG USB and the latest Bluetooth 5.0. There is also the dual-SIM capability that will be useful if a user wants to use separate contracts for home and abroad, or business and leisure. The Mi Mix was a trend starter in terms of bezel-less design and the Mi Mix 2 has a lot to hold up to. In many ways it is still a trend setter but improves in necessary areas.
