Reviews for the OnePlus 5T
It is back! Only a few months after its predecessor was released, OnePlus has now presented its newest smartphone. The OnePlus 5T comes in the modern 2:1 format and has improved cameras. But are there enough changes for it to be a convincing update?
Update: OxygenOS 5.1 (Android 8.1) released.

The Oneplus 5t has been thought and designed and a best-value handset from the get go, and such it is a great success. Premium phone designs are notoriously difficult because they must suffer being compared to much more expensive handsets.

I been using the OnePlus 5T for quite awhile and I have grown to use it and love it. For its fair price point you getting close to the latest tech inside, swift updates really only comparable to Google and a decent camera. Even though it has been recently pulled off the shelves if you can get your hands on one I recommend it if you don’t want to bring the bank on the high end flagships.

For someone who wants a really fast, clean Android phone, the OnePlus 5T is still a very impressive device considering its asking price. I’d happily use one as my daily driver if camera quality wasn’t such a big factor for me. If it’s not a big factor for you, though, I don’t think it gets much better than the 5T.

If you like the idea of a premium case that's not too garish, then this might be a preferable option to the Rosewood edition - the only negative is that the dark wood shows up marks even worse, so you'll want to be relatively careful with how you handle it.

Well, yeah. I definitely think so. The original OnePlus 5 was already an excellent smartphone. It performed phenomenally every day, making it one of the fastest phones I’ve used in 2017. The handset also featured the best camera on any OnePlus device coupled with one of the best built bodies on any OnePlus handset.

One strange omission that keeps affecting OnePlus phones is that there isn’t the correct DRM to allow streaming of Netflix, Google Play Movies or Amazon Prime in HD. Instead, it caps you at SD and sometimes forces you manually alter the resolution in YouTube. It’s a really strange missing feature that I haven’t seen on any other phone and considering this big screen is perfect for watching videos it’s even more annoying you can’t watch it in HD.

So after exploring all of the pros and cons, in the end, the team thinks the OnePlus 5T is still a pretty good phone but it may not be a justified upgrade from the OnePlus 5. Granted, it has powerful specifications, the big 6.01-inch display is great for entertainment and reading, but the camera part is a bit of a let down, given that its cameras fail to capture a better portrait mode compared with its predecessor. It's just fine if you haven't bought the OnePlus 5 though.

Priced at ₹37,999 ($597), the limited-edition smartphone is only available in India (along with China where it was first unveiled a couple of months back). The price is same as the OnePlus 5T, so there’s no premium on the red color variant – except the limited availability of course.

As a last note, the phone does suffer from a major roadblock that might not seem obvious at first. Like many unlocked phones on sale in the US it’s only compatible with GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, so Sprint and Verizon subscribers will have to look somewhere else for an affordable flagship.

It almost seems like déjà vu, but three years ago, I dubbed the OnePlus One as the year's top flagship device. Since that time, a lot has changed. The company is no longer a media darling leveraging itself as an underdog and has since done its best to mature. While it still makes mistakes here and there, it has managed to adhere to its core belief of listening to its community, while building a device that is both affordable and competitive.

The OnePlus 5T is a near faultless phone, and those few weaknesses when compared with other flagship phones are minor at best. Preliminary conclusion: The OnePlus 5T is probably what the OnePlus 5 should have been. It has made a lot better here and above all the camera seems at first glance a change from the OnePlus 3 (T), even the 5, to be worth. But we ask ourselves: Why not immediately? If you had brought the OnePlus 5T directly to the market, OnePlus could have saved a lot of criticism. Although we would not continue to call the OnePlus 5T cheap, the price is now much more justified than before. The OnePlus 5 already had the same chip, battery, and internal storage as a $900 phone, with more RAM, and an arguably better OS. Ever since OnePlus took the wraps off the 5T, we have been besieged by queries not just about how good the device is but also how much (or indeed if at all) it is better than its predecessor, the OnePlus 5. That worthy, if you remember, came with a very good spec sheet and a very promising pair of cameras, even though it was affected to an extent by some rather buggy software, which OnePlus to its credit has been fixing through a regular (almost too regular) flow of updates. So we decided to let the two devices talk it out among themselves to get a better perspective. What follows is a fictional but totally fact-based exchange of views between two phones that were divided by just a T:

The OnePlus 5T isn't an industry-leading phone with the latest features that other companies will have to scramble to match. At that price you can look past a couple hardware shortcomings and less-than-stellar cameras, because you just saved $200, $300 or even $400 off of leading phones from the "big name" companies while getting what is mostly the same — or in a couple cases, a better — daily experience.

The OnePlus 5T is marginally better than the OnePlus 5, that is if you don't desperately need the older model's optical zoom capabilities. You get a more modern, more appealing phone at exactly the same price, so of course the 5T is the better pick. For the most part, we agree that the low-light sensor is more useful than a telephoto lens, but we did miss the ability to frame some shots better. In any case, there's no question of choosing between the two models since OnePlus has replaced the 5 outright and most variants are already out of stock.

A superb display in a trendy aspect ratio, excellent battery life, and fluid Android experience - is that enough to make up for an unimpressive camera performance and the lack of a few key flagship features? That would have been an easy answer if big-name phones hadn't gotten so expensive this year. If one of the pillars of a great smartphone collapses, the whole thing goes to pieces, right? Wrong - the OP5T has the price to prop it up. Value for money is the game, and OnePlus knows how to play it, and it's going strong with the 5T.

The OnePlus 5T is now your best alternative to your stock Android craving, which not only performs well but now has the looks as well. The phone also offers a good camera, is well built and the battery is as reliable as it was on the OnePlus 5. It can be called as a relatively affordable and no nonsense option for anyone looking for a flagship phone. There are no real weak areas and that makes it a very balanced and dependable choice. If only it shipped with Android Oreo with added water and dust resistance, it would have been a more enticing package.

Although it isn't as cheap as OnePlus phones from years gone by, this - on first impressions - still seems like an incredible phone, that just also happens to cost a lot less than regular big-name flagship phones.

Really though, the price is what should make the 5T a winner. You’re getting a more modern screen, slicker camera and smart bonuses like facial recognition, for the same price as the old phone - that’s half the price of an Apple or Google handset.

The OnePlus 5T will appeal to all those planning to spend up to Rs 35,000. The smartphone comes with a starting price tag of Rs 32,999 and offers all the essential and high-end specifications that one is looking for. It has a bezel-less display, face unlock feature and a better camera for low light photography. However, if you are still looking for alternatives then you can consider buying the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, which comes at a similar price tag and also offers a bezel-less display.

If you are into customisation, front-facing fingerprint scanner, then go with the OnePlus 5. Otherwise, If you are into a larger screen with newer screen resolution with a 6.01-inch screen, low light photography, software navigation keys, then OnePlus 5T is the right selection.

The OnePlus 5T is a great phone, especially as it's the same price as its predecessor. However, there's certainly no reason to upgrade if you already have a OnePlus 5. Most of the specifications are the same.

Other than the screen, the one big difference between the new OnePlus flagship and its predecessor is the fact that the secondary rear camera is now dedicated to low-light performance. You now get one 16-megapixel sensor and one 20-megapixel sensor on the rear, both with f/1.7 aperture lenses and the same 27.22mm focal length. In low light, the camera app will automatically switch to the secondary rear camera in an attempt to improve the output. With two cameras, the obligatory portrait mode is also supported. We'll bring you full photo quality test results when we publish our full OnePlus 5T review in the coming days.

It feels too soon for OnePlus to be launching a new flagship phone, but I'm not that upset. I love that the company is so hungry and has the agility to deliver new phones with features that meet new trends.

It's half past five on OnePlus time and the 5T has just been unveiled, the interim upgrade that repacks the OnePlus 5 to make it more enticing for the holiday shoppers. T is to the OnePlus what S is to the iPhone, which means the OnePlus 5T isn't a complete overhaul. It's mostly the same phone on the inside, but there are bigger changes on the outside this time.

Model: The OnePlus 5T, as the name suggests, is not a completely new handset. Rather, it is an incremental upgrade of the OnePlus 5. The OnePlus 5T represents some of the best value for money in the market. While there are a few small compromises to consider, which are no QHD display, stereo speakers, expandable storage or standout camera. The 5T’s industrial aluminium unibody design is great, even if it is basically the same as the OnePlus 5’s. The edges are nicely curved, it is not too big and it is really thin. Unlike with the 5, the 5T is only available in the Midnight Black. The biggest design change is that the fingerprint scanner now sits below the rear camera sensor, rather than on the phone’s front. The fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back because the front of the phone has been completely redesigned. Gone is the chunky bezel around the display, gone is the home button and gone are those capacitive keys that flanked it. Instead, user have got an 18:9 aspect ratio, 6-inch design running nearly edge-to-edge. Having a 6-inch display in a body that is only a hair taller than the 5.5-inch OnePlus 5 is an impressive achievement and real selling point for the 5T. The OnePlus 5T uses a Samsung OLED. It is a big, bright 6-inch panel with a slightly odd 2,160 x 1,080 resolution. This is classed as FHD+, but really it just adds extra pixels to the top so user do not lose any sharpness with the elongated screen. This resolution does not match the quad-HD panels used by some of the competition, even at this price-point, but the OnePlus 5T’s screen is sharp enough so user will not be able to distinguish individual pixels. There is also no support for HDR or Dolby Vision.
Inside the OnePlus 5T is the Snapdragon 835, 6/8 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 64/128 GB UFS 2.1 storage. The OnePlus 5T uses its components effectively. There is no lag, apps open instantly. The OnePlus 5T has 16 MP and 20 MP Sony sensors, both of which boast an increased aperture of f/1.7 for better low-light shots and the same 27.22 mm focal length. As for software, this tweaked Android OnePlus used on its phones is one of the best out there. It is light, looks a lot like stock Android but adds in a load of genuinely thoughtful and useful additions. ‘Face Unlock’ is a key new feature on the 5T. It is a self-explanatory security measure that is sort of like Face ID on the iPhone X. Even though it is not as tech-fueled as Apple’s offering - Face Unlock only uses the front-facing camera, not an array of dedicated sensors - it works surprisingly well. The setup is simple and if the user is looking straight at the phone for unlocking the phone, it will completely bypass the lock-screen. Another new software addition is Parallel Apps: this allows to create secondary versions of apps like LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook for work profiles. It is a neat trick, especially if user use the phone for both personal and work reasons. The 5T takes an already great phone and gives it all the necessary features to beat any 2017 flagship.
