Xiaomi: Affordable smart home sensor comes with motion detection, long battery life and flexible positioning
The smart home not only allows you to control various devices with individual voice commands and thus conveniently adjust the lighting in different areas at different times. In principle, certain actions can be carried out under certain conditions, such as raising and lowering roller shutters, depending on the amount of sunlight, or light activation when a smart lock is opened.
Xiaomi is now offering a new sensor that can be used to automate your own household. This new presence sensor should be able to determine whether people and also animals are present in the sensor's detection area. Specifically, the detection range is specified as 130 degrees. According to Xiaomi, moving people can be reliably detected at a distance of up to six meters. If there is sufficient brightness, people standing still can also be detected at a distance of up to four meters.
The sensor utilizes modern technology, operating with millimeter waves, which are intended to enable energy-efficient detection. Morover, the device does not require a mains connection, but is powered by a battery. The CR2450 cell is said to have a battery life of up to three years. Data is transmitted via Bluetooth (mesh).
Users can use this system to activate lights or an alarm, for example, so that the light can be switched off when people are absent. Users will also be able to view the light intensity over the course of the day.
In China, the model is available at a price of around $27; information on a possible international release is still pending.
