Wiko View 3 Pro Smartphone Review

Last year the French manufacturer had already made the attempt to put features of high-end phones inside mid-range smartphones, and to offer these at a budget price with the Wiko View 2 Pro. While the main focus back then was on a dual-camera setup, a large display and the very large notch in the display, prospective buyers are greeted this time by the Wiko View 3 Pro with a dewdrop notch, a 6.3-inch display and a triple-camera setup.
Instead of a Qualcomm SoC, Wiko opted this time for a Mediatek Helio P60 and offers 6 GB RAM. 128 GB eMMC flash storage is available for storing apps and data, and an ARM Mali-G72 MP3 brings graphic content to the large screen.
But for a price of about 300 Euros (~$338), the competition offers a wide range of options, which is why we will compare the Wiko View 3 Pro in our review to other devices with a similar price and performance. Among these we can find the Samsung Galaxy A50, the Sony Xperia 10, the Huawei P Smart Plus 2019, the Nokia 8.1 and the BQ Aquaris X2. Further smartphones from our database can be entered into any table and added to the selection.

Case - Wiko smartphone with color gradient
The Wiko View 3 Pro has a stable metal frame and a back side made of glass. The design features rounded edges and colors with a visible gradient. In our review model, the color on the frame goes from rose gold in the top to a dark blue in the bottom. The dark blue back side reflects incident light very strongly.
The View 3 Pro is also available in an alternative color described as Deep Bleen. This offers more of a turquoise tone of green, and it has elements that glow in the dark on the back side. The physical operation buttons are found on the right side of the device and sit firmly in their respective enclosures. The NanoSIM/microSD tray is placed on the left side.
In comparison to other smartphones of its class, the Wiko 3 Pro is the heaviest device in our test field with a weight of 184 grams (~6.5 oz). The physical dimensions are slightly larger too, but with a near bezel-less design a big proportion of the area is used by the display.
Connectivity - Mid-range smartphone with large storage space
Wiko provided the View 3 Pro with a Mediatek Helio P60 SoC and an ARM Mali-G72 MP3 graphics unit. Together with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal eMMC flash storage this configuration already belongs to the upper mid-range. If the available storage becomes too scarce, this can be expanded by up to 512 GB with the use of a microSD card, according to the manufacturer. The exFAT format is not supported here. By using an external microSD card the dual-SIM function will be lost since the hybrid slot can only handle either a second NanoSIM or a memory card. Settings options for VoLTE or VoWLAN were not available to us in the View 3's menu.
Users have access to a USB Type-C port for wired data transfer, which is internally limited to the USB 2.0 standard though. Headphones and external speakers can be connected to the Wiko smartphone through a 3.5 mm audio jack. Since DRM-L1 is not supported, content from streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime or Maxdome are not available in HD. The Camera2 API is also subject to slight restrictions with the value "Full".
Software - Smartphone with pure Android
The Wiko 3 Pro offers a near pure Android Pie system with version 9.0, and features security patches up to March 5th 2019. At the time of writing this review, an update with the security patch for April 5th 2019 was already available. The manufacturer has abstained itself from installing third-party apps, and it delivers the 6.3-inch smartphone with only the WiLine in-house app. With it, optional interactive covers can be connected to the smartphone and controlled.
Users can also download the Wiko Live Wallpaper app from the Google Play Store. The app allows for one-second clips to be created or extracted from already existing videos. These are then played as background image when switching screens. Using this for our review was very fun and made for a unique personalization. We must mention, however, that this functionality is also provided by third-party apps.
In the case that several users want to make use of the View 3 Pro, the settings menu allows the configuration of different accounts with this purpose. However, apps cannot be moved to an SD card when the remaining storage space is low, and the card cannot be reformatted as internal storage either.
Communication and GPS - Smartphone with NFC and good Wi-Fi
The Wiko View 3 Pro can establish a mobile radio connection in GSM, 3G and LTE networks. The latter is possible with category 7 LTE, whereby download speeds of up to 300 Mb/s and upload speeds of up to 150 Mb/s can be reached.
In close range, users have access to NFC, Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi supporting the 802.11 a, b, g, n and ac standards. On the other hand, users will have to do without 2x2 MIMO antennas. Nevertheless, the transfer speeds that we measured in our review are still very good. With our Linksys EA8500 reference router, the View 3 Pro reached speeds of up to 335 Mb/s for receiving and of up to 308 Mb/s for sending data. As a result, the large Android smartphone sits in one of the top spots of our test field and leaves a big part of the competition behind.
We verify how well the Wiko View 3 Pro can determine its location by using the GPS Test app. The Android smartphone has access to GPS, BeiDou, GLOSNASS and Galileo, whereby we were able to achieve an accuracy of 4 meters (~13 feet) outdoors. On the contrary, establishing a satellite connection was not possible indoors.
In our mandatory bike ride we compare the View 3 Pro with our reference device, the Garmin Edge 500. The registered route on long straight paths often lies next to the actual route, but curves and sudden changes in direction are registered quite well. Therefore the Wiko View 3 Pro is better suited for simple navigation tasks.
Telephone and call quality - Good connection with Wiko View 3 Pro
The Wiko View 3 Pro provides users with Google's standard phone app. This offers a direct view of favorites and allows the quick display of a number keypad. Two other tabs lead to recent calls and all contacts. The Wiko View 3 Pro showed good volume during phone calls, and it filtered ambient noises reliably. Both parties at either side of the conversation are easily understood, and communication is only hindered in loud environments such as busy streets. The included stereo headset can remedy this situation since it protects users better from ambient noises.
Cameras - Budget smartphone with triple-camera setup
Wiko has equipped the View 3 Pro with a triple-camera setup in the back side. This provides a 13MP sensor with an aperture of f/1.7 and a 120 ° wide angle, a 12MP sensor with an f/2.4 aperture and a pixel pitch of 1.25 µm, as well as a 5MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.2. There is also a 16MP front camera with an f/2.0 aperture available for portrait photos. This produces selfies of medium quality. Fine details and structures are well captured, but bright areas in photos look excessively bright and unnatural compared to dark colors. Users can influence the quality of photos with the camera app by applying an AI-driven beautifying effect or by regulating the background sharpness with a freely programmable scale. With the exception of color filters and HDR, there are no further functions with which the results can be adjusted.
The main camera in the Wiko View 3 Pro benefits greatly from good lighting conditions. Panoramic images taken on dull days look somewhat dark, whereby many details lack sharpness. The difference between bright and dark image areas is very noticeable here too, creating very bright and comparatively dark spots in the photo. However, strong colors are captured quite well. The excessive emphasis on bright image areas continues to be present in close-ups, whereby colors are also well reproduced here. Fine details and structures can be identified easily as well, and object edges are clearly differentiated from one another. The Wiko View 3 Pro does not produce any usable photos in low light. Even the outlines of objects in the image and the sparse light source are barely identifiable in the test subject that we chose. Alongside the already mentioned adjustment options for the front camera, the camera app allows the use of a wide-angle mode and of Google Lens on objects shown in the view finder. A pro mode or something similar is not offered by the Wiko View 3 Pro.
Videos recorded in movement result in a similar quality to the one found in our sample photos. An image stabilizer takes care of evening out camera shake, and the resolution can be set to 720p, 1080p or to the full screen format of the smartphone's display. However, the device does not provide a high-frame-rate mode nor any other adjustment options.
We verify how well the camera in the Wiko View 3 Pro can capture colors with the ColorChecker Passport. It is shown here that colors appear lighter than they should. On the other hand, gray tones appear darker than in the template.
The Wiko smartphone can reproduce the test chart well under controlled lighting conditions. Fine details and structures can be easily identified, colors look a bit light though. In addition, there is a slight paleness in the lower corners.
Accessories and warranty - Smartphone with stereo headset out of the box
The Wiko 3 Pro includes in the box a USB power adapter with a corresponding USB Type-C cable, a silicone cover, a stereo headset and a SIM needle. Further accessories such as the interactive WiLine smart folio cover can be found on the manufacturer's website.
Wiko honors a 24-month warranty on the View 3 Pro. Further information on this can be found in our FAQ about Guarantees, Return policies and Warranties.
Input devices and handling - Good touchscreen with smooth surface
For text input, users of the View 3 Pro will find Google's standard keyboard app, Gboard. Long sentences can be entered quickly and easily with it, whereby the touchscreen reacts reliably to every input. The smooth surface allows for trouble-free drag-and-drop operations.
The Wiko smartphone can be unlocked without issues through the fingerprint scanner in the back. Saved fingerprints are identified quickly, and we rarely needed to use our fingerprint for a second time to unlock the phone during our review.
Display - Wiko View 3 Pro with 6.3-inch display
The display in the Wiko View 3 Pro is made of a 6.3-inch IPS panel and offers a resolution of 2340x1080 pixels. The maximum brightness is 465 cd/m², without using the sensor, and 461 cd/m² in the APL50 test. As a result, brightness sits below the comparison devices in our test field, and even the previous model, the Wiko View 2 Pro, provided higher brightness. The brightness distribution is also only below average with 87%. In return, there is no PWM being used to control brightness, which means that even users with sensitive eyes do not have to fear any problems with the use of the Wiko smartphone.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM not detected | |||
In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8627 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Our measurements show that the View 3 Pro has a contrast ratio of 1177:1 and a slightly high black value of 0.39 cd/m². The latter was even higher in our APL50 test with a value of 0.52 cd/m², which also visibly decreased contrast. This dropped to a value around 887:1 (APL50), whereby colors are not well separated from each other, and black image areas are covered by a gray veil.
Furthermore, the CalMAN analysis shows that the display in the Wiko smartphone has a clear blue tint. Color reproduction can be made warmer or colder through a freely programmable scale found in the settings menu, and a night light mode adds a noticeable yellow tint to the image.

The Wiko View 3 Pro can be used outdoors without issues as long as sunny areas are avoided. The provided brightness is enough for the content in the display to be readable. However, surrounding objects are quickly reflected under oblique viewing angles, which severely impairs the view of the display.
The IPS panel in the Wiko smartphone has very stable viewing angles, which makes the display readable from almost any angle without it showing any distortions or color shifts. As long as the view of the display is not hindered by reflections of surrounding objects, the View 3 Pro can even be used from unusual positions.
Performance - Wiko smartphone with good performance
The Wiko View 3 Pro provides a configuration belonging to the upper mid-range with the use of a Mediatek Helio P60, an ARM Mali-G72 MP3 graphics unit, 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal eMMC flash storage. This makes it suitable for diverse applications, which go beyond everyday apps like WhatsApp, Netflix and Internet browsers.
In our benchmark tests, the Wiko smartphone achieved results, which allow it to ensure itself a solid position in the upper range of our test field. The pure system performance is often enough to come out in first place, but smartphones like the Nokia 8.1 or the Samsung Galaxy A50 are one step ahead when it comes to graphically intensive tests.

The internal storage in the View 3 Pro reached good read speeds on our storage benchmarks, but it showed weaknesses in writing speeds. However, in comparison to other smartphones of its class, the values reached are above average and enough to gain second place in our test field.
According to the manufacturer the internal storage can be expanded by up to 512 GB through a microSD card. The internal card reader reached good read and write speeds with our Toshiba Exceria M501 reference memory card, which are on par with the competing devices in our test field.

Games - Wiko smartphone suitable for gaming
The ARM Mali-G72 MP3 internal graphics unit is a mid-range GPU, which is suitable for devices with moderate demand for graphics performance. Therefore, modern games can be played smoothly at medium quality levels, whereby a bit of choppiness can be noticed with particularly demanding titles. The games tested by us, Arena of Valor and PUBG Mobile ran without issues all the time, and were able to be controlled reliably through the touchscreen. The smooth display surface made it possible to go through long gaming sessions without the fingertips becoming strained. The position sensor reacted reliably in games that required it for their control, and it transferred the movements of the smartphone directly to the system.
Since smartphones with a similar configuration only reached frame rates of 25 fps in our PUBG Mobile tests, we cannot rule out the possibility of users of the Wiko View 3 Pro also facing small frame drops during long gaming sessions.
Emissions - View 3 Pro gets slightly warm
Temperature
According to our measurements, the View 3 Pro exhibited maximum surface temperatures of 33.6 °C (~92 °F) in idle usage and 36.4 °C (~98 °F) under load. With this, the smartphone feels warm particularly in the top, which is also perceived by the hands when playing in landscape mode. But the device never becomes so hot that it cannot be held in the hand. We were unable to detect restrictions resulting from the temperature on the inside of the device being too high in our review.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 36.2 °C / 97 F, compared to the average of 35.1 °C / 95 F, ranging from 21.9 to 63.7 °C for the class Smartphone.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 36.4 °C / 98 F, compared to the average of 33.9 °C / 93 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 31.1 °C / 88 F, compared to the device average of 32.8 °C / 91 F.
Speaker
The speaker in the Wiko smartphone provides relatively high volume with a sound spectrum characterized by low highs. However, sounds below the high mids decline quite quickly, making the View 3 Pro only partially suitable for playing media content. External speakers or headphones are recommended in the long run, which can be connected to the smartphone through the 3.5 mm audio jack, among other ways. This connector holds corresponding plugs firmly in place, and does not have a negative impact on sound quality. The included stereo headset is rather suitable for voice reproduction and is only adequate for music playback when no other alternatives are available.

Energy consumption
Our measurements show that the Wiko View 3 Pro has an energy requirement of at least 0.77 watts in idle usage and of 5.53 watts maximum under load. This makes the energy consumption significantly lower than the one observed in most devices in our test field. Only the Nokia 8.1 and the Wiko View 2 Pro predecessor exhibit a similarly low requirement.
The provided charger offers an output of 18 watts and has therefore sufficient capacity to be able to supply the Wiko View 3 Pro with enough energy.

Verdict - Wiko View 3 Pro convinces with performance, but camera shows weaknesses
The Wiko View 3 Pro scores points in our review with its design, which is embossed with an attractive color gradient. The 6.3-inch Android smartphone does not show any shortcomings in its build quality, and it continues to show its qualities with the system performance too. The mid-range performance is refined by an upscale storage configuration, which results in a smooth operating system.
Not only does the Wiko View 3 Pro shine with its large display but also with its large storage configuration. However, the camera is not able to fully meet our expectations.
The greatly advertised triple-camera setup does not manage to completely meet our expectations. While close-ups look pleasing under good lighting conditions, subjects become dark under poor lighting conditions, and brighter areas are overexposed. Buyers that can deal with this shortcoming will be thrilled with the long battery life, and will find joy in the device's design and the large display.
