Case, equipment and operation
The Wiko View5 Plus, which is mostly made of plastic, is quite heavy due to its large battery, but it still feels good in the hand and leaves a solid impression. The build quality is good, but the gaps could be a bit more even in some areas. The Wiko smartphone is available in the unusual colors Aurora Blue and Iceland Silver.
Wiko does not offer a full-fledged dual-SIM solution, but relies on a hybrid slot this time, in which the second card slot can accommodate either a nano-SIM or a microSD card. The latter does not support the exFAT file system. DRM certification is also not supported, which means that protected content cannot be viewed in HD.
The operating system is Android 10, which is still equipped with the security updates from October 5, 2020 at the time of the test. This is not very up-to-date anymore, but Wiko usually rolls out new patches every three to six months. However, we do not expect an update to Android 11.
LTE is available for the data connection on the road, which serves all common bands in this country and did not show any problems with the reception in the test. Wi-Fi 5 is installed for Wi-Fi networks, which provides a decent speed and also works stably.
The voice quality is quite decent when the View5 is held to the ear. A slight crackling is audible every now and then, but this is not particularly present. The suppression of ambient noise works rather moderately and is accompanied by a hiss depending on its intensity, and the user's voice becomes muffled. Furthermore, loud background noise is not completely suppressed. VoLTE and WLAN calling are supported.
A fingerprint scanner on the back or a less secure 2D facial recognition is available for biometric security. The former is only marginally slower, but works reliably. Inputs are quickly implemented by the View5's touchscreen and the system speed is quite decent, although there are small stutters every now and then. The dedicated button for Google Assistant is placed a bit awkwardly between the volume rocker and the power button.

Cameras - Four lenses in the Wiko smartphone
The camera equipment is identical to that of the smaller sister model. The front-facing camera only captures a few details and pale colors. However, the software offers various AR filters in addition to the portrait mode.
The 48 MP main camera takes decent pictures, but is quickly overwhelmed by backlight and tends to burn out image areas despite automatic HDR. The ultra-wide-angle lens curves the image quite a bit and only captures few details in depth due to the low resolution, but otherwise does its job well. The other two lenses only offer little added value

Display - Brighter IPS for the View5 Plus
On the spec sheet, the Plus model has the same display as the View5, but Wiko actually gives the review sample a bit more brightness. It is 555 cd/m² in the center of the screen with the ambient light sensor enabled, but only 517 cd/m² are available when the brightness is adjusted manually. With a full black display, the measured value is lower than an even distribution of bright and dark areas (0.52 cd/m²), so the contrast ratio drops to a still good 1,069:1 in the APL50 measurement
A high-frequency flickering can be detected with the oscilloscope, but it is not a classic PWM

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 31650 Hz | ≤ 4 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 31650 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 4 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 31650 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 19035 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Performance, emissions and battery life
The MediaTek Helio P35 in Wiko's View5 Plus turns out to be much faster than the SoC in the View5 despite its older age. Furthermore, there are 4 GB instead of 3 GB of working memory and the internal is doubled to 128 GB. However, the latter is again not one of the fastest of its kind. The integrated GPU is also only suitable for simple games; the details have to be turned down considerably for more demanding titles
The surface temperatures always remain low and Wiko's phone does not even get warm to the touch even under constant load
The mono speaker on the bottom edge plays very loudly, but the audible range remains quite muffled because it simply lacks depth. The audio jack is certainly the better alternative despite the low signal-to-noise ratio
The View5 Plus excels in battery runtimes. Despite a battery with identical performance, the Plus model manages to squeeze a few more hours out of the energy storage

Pros
Cons
Verdict - An additional investment that pays off
The Wiko View5 Plus offers a faster SoC and more storage than its sister model View5 on the spec sheet, but the review shows that Wiko also gives the display a higher brightness and can extend the already very good battery runtimes even more
The Wiko View5 Plus is a good entry-level smartphone with extremely long battery runtimes
The screen's low pixel density is certainly partly responsible for the long runtimes, but it could have been a bit higher in view of the large surface. DRM certification and exFAT support for optional microSD cards are also missing. The Bluetooth standard has also become obsolete
The additional 40 Euros for the Plus model are well invested because the higher system speed in particular is positively noticed in everyday use
Price and availability
The Wiko View5 Plus is available in the color tested here at
for just under 200 Euros, among others.
