Volvo promises over-the-air updates for all of its electric vehicles
Volvo has announced that all new vehicles will be able to receive over-the-air (OTA) software updates. The company says this tool will drive its ambition to continuously improve its customers' cars.
The OTA ability was already available in fully electric vehicles and has been added to the latest XC90, S60 and V60 hybrid cars. This means that all of Volvo's new electric models will now support OTA updates.
The latest OTA update, which Volvo is rolling out this week, will bring Android 11 to the vehicles. Android 11 is the newest version of the Android Automotive OS. Other improvements include a more comprehensive range of categories in the Google Play store, including navigation, parking and charging apps. An update expected later this year will bring video streaming abilities to the vehicles.
The update also improves the vehicle's energy management, regulating battery temperatures during hot or cold weather and boosting the driving range. The EV's charging ability is also upgraded by preheating the battery.
The Volvo Cars app will now receive updates more frequently on the car's battery level while charging. The company also announced that the infotainment system developed in partnership with Google is now available for all new models.
