Steam’s hardware and software survey for January 2023 reveals that AMD has managed to stop the rot in terms of how many of those surveyed use a combination of a Windows-based machine with an AMD processor. Team Red hit usage share of 32.87% in November but this slumped to 32.16% in December. However, the latest result shows 32.84% for AMD in January on Windows-based desktops and laptops, while the overall result for all operating systems is also good news for Team Red, with 33.24% for AMD and 66.76% usage share for Intel.
Of course, the overall picture still looks strong for Team Blue, with two-thirds of those surveyed utilizing an Intel-based system. But this share has been in steady decline, with Steam’s chart showing that Intel commanded over 72% share around 18 months ago. Almost every month, AMD manages to take snack-sized bites out of Intel’s share, and it is likely that healthy continued sales of Zen 3 parts has contributed to this remarkably protracted fightback. Sales data from Mindfactory (provided by TechEpiphany) demonstrates that attractive deals on older chips may be working wonders for AMD.
For instance, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D tops the sales list with 350 units sold, which contrasts well against the best-selling Zen 4 part on 110 units sold (Ryzen 7 7700X) and the most popular Intel chip, the Core i5-13600KF, on 150 units shipped. While this is only from one European-based retailer, it does offer a snapshot of the market as a whole, and the top six selling chips are all from AMD’s Zen 3 generation. Price cuts on these still modern and powerful AM4 processors have made them more appealing to PC builders balking at the high cost of choosing brand-new CPUs (Ryzen 9 7950X: US$699 and AM5-compatible motherboard required).
