Not much is yet known about a surprise guest at the Mobile World Congress, which starts next Monday, March 3. Xiaomi, Samsung and Honor will announce some of their new products on the Sunday beforehand, most of which have already been leaked. Not so with Realme. Just last week, not much news was expected from the Oppo subsidiary, which focuses more on inexpensive smartphones.
But then came the recent announcement about a yet unnamed "ultra-phone", which hinted at 10x zoom, although it was unclear as to whether this meant optical or digital. This has now been clarified thanks to the latest teasers. As the first smartphone since the Galaxy S23 Ultra two years ago, Realme appears to be reviving the optical 10x telephoto lens and combining it with a sensor in 1-inch format, although the latter is probably intended for the main camera and not the telephoto.
First sample photos from the new Realme "Ultra camera"
Today's teaser posters are complemented by two photos from the new smartphone camera. Both were taken on the telephoto at an apparent 234 mm equivalent focal length and an extremely fast F/2.0 aperture for a (periscope?) telephoto. The first sample photo also seems to confirm a macro function with a floating element feature.
Potential GT 7 Ultra on the way?
What the new Realme camera flagship will be called is still unclear, but since the current Snapdragon 8 Elite flagship is called Realme GT 7 Pro, it's not impossible that a potential Realme GT 7 Ultra is around the corner, but this is just speculation on our part. In any case, no leaks about this Realme phone have surfaced to date, which could make next week's presentation more exciting than it has been for a long time. Especially in view of the rather sad Oppo Find X8 Ultra news very recently, this is potentially a ray of hope from Realme for global Oppo fans.
