If you're looking for an inexpensive laptop with a large screen to park in the kitchen or use as a home-office PC, Toshiba's Satellite L555-S7916 is worth a look. The expansive keyboard, which includes a dedicated numeric keypad, raises the comfort level for word processing, Web site navigation, and spreadsheet editing chores--and that's about it. This Toshiba might make a good kitchen PC, but beware of poor Wi-Fi support and the inferior display image.

A decent desktop replacement with excellent 3D performance for the price. The Toshiba Satellite L555-10R is a powerful and affordable desktop replacement system. Performance stands out for the money and, although there are some minor issues with build quality, we can happily recommend it as a competitive laptop. We like the Satellite L555-10R. There are a few niggles, but performance - especially 3D - is good for the money and as long as the warm palmrest doesn't put you off, this is definitely worth a look.

The Toshiba Satellite L555D-S7930 is a notebook for the mainstream masses looking for a big screen and a low price. Just don't mistake this machine for a multimedia rig because of the big screen.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: Lower middle-class GPU that features a low shader count and a 64 Bit memory bus but a high clock speed. Similar to the desktop Radeon 4550. Supports Avivo HD and DirectX 10.1.
ATI Radeon HD 4100: The HD 4100 is a stripped down version of the HD 4200. Probably the clock speed of the chip is reduced and therefore also the performance.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5165: Renamed Mobility Radeon HD 4650 with slightly higher clock speed. Therefore, no DirectX 11 support and only slightly faster than a HD 4650.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T6500:
Entry level Penryn based dual-core CPU with a small 2MB level 2 cache and FSB800. Similar to the T6570 but without VT-x.
P8700:
Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.
P7450: Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
Intel Core i5:
430M:
The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
AMD Athlon II:
M300:
Entry level dual core CPU by AMD which features an integrated memory controller (400MHz DDR2) and is based (partially?) on the K10 core. The performance should be compareable to an old Merom based 1.8 Core 2 Duo. The CPU supports 64 Bit and Virtualization.

3 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.2 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
67%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
