In Chromosome Evil 2, an alien organism has almost completely wiped out civilization, turning the world into a wasteland overrun by mutated creatures. As the commander of a small group of survivors, players must uncover the truth behind the mysterious threat. The survival RPG is currently 90% off on Steam, bringing the price down to just $1.99 from $19.99 until November 12. According to SteamDB, this marks the first time Chromosome Evil 2 has dropped below $2.

Gameplay is all about staying alive. Players lead a squad of up to six soldiers through abandoned buildings and military facilities crawling with grotesque monsters. An active pause feature allows them to stop the action at any time, issue orders and carefully plan their next move. Supplies need to be managed wisely, however, as medicine, food and ammunition are constantly in short supply. To make matters worse, the monsters grow more dangerous with each passing day. Spend too much time hunting for loot, and you might end up becoming prey yourself.

Between missions, players manage a mobile military convoy. This is where wounded survivors receive treatment, vehicles are repaired, weapons are crafted and new technologies are researched. Each survivor has different abilities and can specialize in areas such as combat, medical care or research.

Steam reviewers particularly praise the game's strategic depth, oppressive horror atmosphere and challenging resource management. However, inventory and squad management can be rather cumbersome, while pathfinding still leaves room for improvement. There's also a punishing difficulty level that demands plenty of patience, even from experienced strategy players. Despite these shortcomings, an impressive 87% of roughly 270 Steam user reviews are positive. Chromosome Evil 2 is also officially rated Playable on the Steam Deck.
