In For The King, even the best-laid plans can unravel with a single roll of the dice. The fantasy RPG calls for plenty of tactical thinking and is currently available on Steam for less than $2 for the first time.

The fantasy kingdom of Fahrul has descended into chaos. The king has been murdered, monsters and bandits are terrorizing the countryside and the surviving queen is so desperate that she calls on her people to take up arms. In For The King, players lead a party of three adventurers on a quest to save the kingdom.

The game world resembles a traditional board game, with adventurers moving across a map made up of hexagonal tiles. Encounters with monsters and bandits trigger turn-based battles, where players can choose from a range of attacks and special abilities. Success, however, doesn't depend on character stats and equipment alone. Luck plays a major role, too. Depending on the attack, players may need to pass several dice-based checks to deal full damage. That makes putting together a well-balanced party all the more important. A smart combination of melee fighters, ranged attackers and mages can make a big difference in battle.

The world changes with every playthrough, and if the entire party falls, it's back to square one – adding a touch of roguelike gameplay to the mix. Fortunately, players can gradually unlock new classes and items for future adventures. Those who prefer to face the kingdom's dangers together can also team up with two friends in local or online co-op.

German gaming outlet 4Players gave For The King 8.5 out of 10, praising its clever blend of board game and RPG mechanics, varied adventures and charming presentation. However, the heavy reliance on luck won't appeal to everyone, as even carefully planned moves can fail because of an unlucky dice roll. The game has also been well received on Steam, where 87% of around 44,000 user reviews are positive. On Metacritic, For The King holds a Metascore of 79, while its user score is somewhat lower at 6.9. Much of the criticism centers on the heavy influence of randomness and the steep difficulty. Players who are easily frustrated may therefore have a tough time with this fantasy RPG.

New all-time low on Steam

For The King normally costs just under $20 on Steam, but it's currently 90% off until November 19, bringing the price down to just $1.99. According to SteamDB, the previous lowest price was $3.99, meaning the RPG now costs just half its former record low. On Steam Deck, For The King is officially rated "Playable."
