Deal | Normally $50: 4X strategy game with custom fantasy factions is now free to play on Steam

At its core, Age of Wonders 4 is a classic fantasy 4X strategy game, but with an interesting twist: It gives players extensive freedom to create and customize their own races. Earlier this week, we reported on the 2023 release from Triumph Studios and Paradox Interactive after it reached a new all-time low. Now, the game is completely free to play until Monday. Afterward, it will still be available at a 60% discount, bringing the price down to $19.99 from $50 – its lowest price to date, according to SteamDB.
The game begins with choosing a race. Players can select from humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, halflings, feline, rat-like, toad-like and mole-like creatures. They can also customize their appearance, culture and magical affinities. From there, the goal is to build a powerful empire through familiar 4X gameplay: exploring, expanding, managing resources and conquering territory. More details about the gameplay can be found in our article from earlier this week.

In terms of reviews, Age of Wonders 4 has been well received. On Steam, the 4X strategy game holds an 80% positive rating from nearly 23,500 reviews, while its Metacritic score stands at 84. The game is praised for its rewarding progression system, although its balancing reportedly leaves some room for improvement. Anyone curious to see how it plays can try it for free this weekend – including on the Steam Deck.
