Nexus Mods has rejected an outright ban on AI-generated mods, instead requiring AI-use disclosures for new uploads and giving existing mod authors until January 2, 2027, to comply. The policy reinforces the platform’s “pro-human creativity” stance through mandatory labeling, moderation measures and a pledge not to use hosted mods to train AI or license them for that purpose.

Nexus Mods has announced that mod authors must now disclose AI use for every new mod uploaded to the site. Authors of existing mods have a 60-day grace period until January 2, 2027, to bring their pages into compliance with the new rules. Nexus Mods will not ban AI-generated mods, but its position remains clear: the site is “pro-human creativity.”

An updated AI policy for mods

The new rules took effect on November 3. Rather than implementing an outright ban on AI-generated content, Nexus Mods concluded that mandatory disclosure was the better option.

AI labels become mandatory

Nexus Mods already offered three AI labels: AI-generated, AI-assisted, and AI-generated promotional media. What changes now is that authors must declare AI use when uploading a new mod, and those using the AI-assisted label must publicly explain how and where AI was used. The labels let users filter content, and Nexus says it is refining its content-preference tools so users can filter out AI-generated modsentirely.

This update follows long-running discussions in the video game modding community about the use of AI-generated content. Many modders spend years or even decades working on large-scale projects, while others have used AI to produce a mod in just a few days.

Nexus Mods co-owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann said the new update is meant to make AI use easier to see, noting that the site already had AI tags but could do more to make that information clearer and more accessible.

No ban on AI-generated mods, despite ‘pro-human creativity’ stance

Folmann opened the post by declaring the site “pro-human creativity,” calling it the basic premise behind every subsequent decision. He said Nexus Mods “won’t introduce an outright ban on AI-generated mods,” and explained:

“The answer is simple: AI is currently used throughout the whole process of creation, from script autocompletion to generation of textures, voices, and full assets, and it is difficult to draw a clear boundary between what is acceptable and unacceptable.”

He added:

“An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process but will prevent people from mentioning its use. We’d prefer the opposite; it should be out in the open, clearly labeled, and regulated according to the rules that we can implement on our platform.”

Undisclosed AI use will face moderation

Players can still report mods that use AI without disclosure, but enforcement will not rest solely on reports. Once the grace period ends, staff will notify authors whose mods are missing required details and ask them to fix them. Authors who still fail to comply may face warnings, account restrictions, or mod removal. Folmann was candid that not everyone will disclose, promising clear moderation standards with consequences for breaking the rules.

Nexus Mods also pledged never to use hosted mods to train AI or to sell or license them to anyone who would. It is adding permission options that let authors decide whether others may use their mods with AI tools or for training, with those options defaulting to “Ask Me.”

Going forward, disclosure is mandatory for every new upload to Nexus Mods. The approach resembles Steam’s, which requires developers to disclose AI-generated content in their games, though Nexus goes further by also covering AI-assisted work.
