Amazon has a new and cheaper Kindle Colorsoft, but it is already facing stiff competition from rivals, one of which is currently on sale. Onyx's Boox Go Color 7 is currently cheaper thanks to a discount, but it also has better features including page turn buttons and an impressive 64GB of expandable storage.

Amazon just announced two new Kindle Colorsoft models which join the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition that was announced in 2024. One of the new models is the Kindle Colorsoft which has a lower price tag than the Signature Edition, but also comes with half the storage (16GB). Thankfully, there are other brands of eReaders with a color E Ink display, and one of them is not only cheaper than Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft series but also boasts better specs.

The Boox Go Color 7 a.k.a. Boox Go Color 7 (Gen 1) was released in June 2024, and while it already has a successor, the eReader is still a good buy especially now that it is on sale. The Onyx eReader is down to $219.99 on Amazon which is $50 off its launch price of $269.99. At the discounted price, the Boox Go Color 7 is not only cheaper than the new cheapest Kindle Colorsoft which costs $249.99, but it also blows it out of the water when you compare their specs and features.

Like the Kindle Colorsoft, the Boox Go Color 7 has a 7-inch color ePaper display with a 150 ppi resolution for color and a 300 ppi resolution for black and white. It also has a front light whose temperature can be changed from cold to warm. One feature many users will love are the physical page turn buttons. These buttons are placed on the thick bezel of the eReader in a fashion similar to that of the beloved but discontinued Kindle Oasis. There's also a built-in accelerometer that allows the device to auto-rotate when you change the orientation, a feature that's missing on the Kindle Colorsoft.

The Boox Go Color 7 has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage — double what you get on the more expensive Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition. There's a MicroSD card slot if you need more storage, and there's OTG support so users can plug a storage device into the eReader via its USB-C port.

While Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft has the advantage of being waterproof, the Boox Go Color 7 is described as having a water-repellent design, so it only offers protection against splashes and accidental spills. It boasts a built-in speaker and a microphone, so you can playback audio books or record voice notes.

Onyx ships the Boox Go Color 7 with Android 12, allowing users to install apps from the Google Play Store including the Kindle app. With a 2,300mAh battery capacity, the Boox Go Color 7 should last a few weeks on a single charge.

The Boox Go Color 7 is also discounted on the manufacturer's website, and unlike on Amazon where it is available in Black, Boox has the eReader in Black and White and includes a free magnetic case with orders.
