After a successful Kickstarter campaign that concluded in December 2024 with approximately €350,000 raised, the Mudita Kompakt e-ink phone has become available in Europe for €439. The Mudita Kompakt offers a noteworthy alternative to smartphones or feature phones. While it's based on Android, it does provide a "Google-free" experience with only a few pre-installed apps that have been specifically developed for the e-ink screen.
Mudita OS K 1.2.0 release in July, roadmap until early 2026
Based on user feedback, the Polish company plans to release update 1.2.0 for Mudita OS K later this month. This is the customized Android version for the Kompakt, and the extensive change log includes multiple mentionable bullet points:
- navigation and a turn-by-turn mode in the "Maps & Navigation" app
- simplified sideloading (installing Android apps as an APK) via the Mudita Center, which is the desktop software for the Mudita Kompakt
- numerous improvements and optimizations for the launcher, on-screen keyboard, messaging app, music player, e-reader, camera, calendar, as well as the chess, meditation, and accessibility apps (check out Mudita’s official blog post for all other changes included in update 1.2)
Furthermore, the Managing Director of Mudita presented a roadmap for the future development of Mudita OS in a YouTube video (also embedded below). The schedule spans from September 2025 to early 2026. For instance, playlist management will be added to the music player app in September 2025, while group messaging support will be introduced later this fall.
For early 2026, a title search and a lock screen widget are planned for the music app. Additionally, the Mudita Kompakt's e-book app is slated to receive new features early next year, including search and filter options, landscape mode and more.
