ThinkPad P14s Gen 3: Lenovo's lightest mobile workstation launched with Alder Lake and Quadro T550, ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1 introduced for the first time ↺
Update 03/04: Lenovo reached out to us and clarified that the ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1 is being positioned as a new entry-level system, and it is not a merger of the ThinkPad P15 and P17 mobile workstations. The article has been edited accordingly. Readers may kindly note.
Lenovo is introducing an upgraded ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 at MWC 2022 along with a new ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1. The previous generation Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 was available in both Intel and AMD flavors. This time, however, Lenovo seems to have opted only for Intel Alder Lake-H options, at least for today's launch.
Lenovo is pitching the ThinkPad P14s as its lightest mobile workstation. Compared to last year's P14s Gen 2, this year's P14s Gen 3 is only 0.59 inches thick and weighs a 100 g lighter at 1.39 kg. The ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1, on the other hand, is up to 0.69 inches thick and has a heft of 1.73 kg. Save for some differences in the display, keyboard, and the battery, both the ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 and the ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1 feature similar specifications.
Both the new ThinkPad P-series mobile workstations are powered by Intel 12th gen Alder Lake-H Core i7 options up to the 14C/20T Core i7-12800H. The GPU is upgraded to the Nvidia Quadro T550 this year up from the Quadro T500 we had seen in the previous generation. This is the second Quadro T550 workstation laptop we are seeing this year after the HP Zbook Firefly G9 that was announced at CES 2022.
As evident from the nomenclature, the ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 and the ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1 differ primarily in the display department. The P14s Gen 3 comes with a choice of 14-inch IPS displays available in 1920x1200 (touch and non-touch), 2240x1400 (300-nit, 100% sRGB), and 3840x2400 (touch, X-Rite calibration, 500-nit, 100% DCI-P3) options. The P16s i Gen 1, on the other hand, offers only 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 options and omits the 3840x2400 panel.
Up to 48 GB of DDR4-3200 memory is supported. However, only one SO-DIMM slot is available for expansion. Both workstations can offer up to 2 TB of PCIe Gen4 NVMe storage. Most connectivity needs are taken care of by the included USB 3.1 Type-A, Thunderbolt 4, RJ-45, and HDMI ports. Apart from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, Lenovo also offers 4G LTE WWAN connectivity.
A 39.3 or 52.5 Whr cell powers the ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 while the P16s i Gen 1 uses 52.5 Whr or 86 Whr battery options. Being mobile workstations, both the ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 and the ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1 are certified to work with various ISV programs including ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Creo, Revit, SOLIDWORKS, and the likes.
The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 3 and the ThinkPad P16s i Gen 1 will be available from April 2022 in Black and Grey color options starting from €1,529 and €1,549, respectively.
