Lenovo has refreshed the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3, a 13.3-inch laptop that debuts alongside the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 3. Like the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2, the Gen 3 is available with AMD or Intel processors. Please see our corresponding launch article for more information about the Intel-based edition, which Lenovo calls the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3i. According to Lenovo, AMD models will arrive with Ryzen PRO 6000 series APUs with integrated Radeon 600M GPUs.
While Lenovo does not state which APUs will be available, the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 supports lower-powered APUs, not AMD's 35 W or 45 W options. As such, it seems likely that Lenovo will offer the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 with the Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U and the Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U, successors to the Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U and Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U, respectively. For reference, the Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U and the Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U contain the following differences:
CPU cores | CPU threads | Base clock | Boost clock | iGPU | GPU cores | Default TDP | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U | 6 | 12 | 2.9 GHz | up to 4.5 GHz | Radeon 660M | 6 | 15 W-28 W |
AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U | 8 | 16 | 2.7 GHz | up to 4.7 GHz | Radeon 680M | 12 | 15 W-28 W |
Additionally, Lenovo will sell the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 with 41 Wh and 54.7 Wh batteries, both smaller than the capacity of the ThinkPad X13 Yoga 3. Purportedly, the larger battery will deliver up to 40% additional battery life, although Lenovo only confirms this figure 'based on testing with MobileMark 2018'. It seems that both battery options will come with up to 32 GB of RAM, a 2 TB SSD and up to a WXQGA (2,560 x 1,600) display with 400 nits of peak brightness.
Moreover, the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 comes with 4G LTE or optional 5G sub6 modems for working on the move. Lenovo has included a fingerprint reader too, along with a camera shutter, a Kensington lock slot and optional PrivacyGuard. Incidentally, Lenovo equips all configurations with HDMI 2.0b and USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, plus USB 3.2 Type-C and USB 4 Type-C connections.
Lenovo will first release the ThinkPad X13 Gen 3 in North America, starting June 2022. For some reason, the company has not confirmed when the laptop will launch elsewhere. The laptop will cost at least US$1,119; full pricing details remain unknown at this stage.
