Early word of Xiaomi's pricing for the global Xiaomi 12 series surfaced recently. With the company now confirming the phones for a March 15 debut, more concrete information looks to be filtering out, and the latest leak provides specific pricing for the three phones in the lineup—the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12X, and Xiaomi 12 Pro.
According to leaker SnoopyTech who has also leaked press releases for the devices, the Xiaomi 12 will start at €849 for the 8/128 GB model, with buyers having to pony up an extra €50 for the 8/256 GB configuration. The Xiaomi 12 Pro starts at €1,099 for 12/128 GB, while the 12/256 GB SKU is to cost €1,199.
Most would consider those prices to be, well, outrageous. The Samsung Galaxy S22 starts at €849 just like the Xiaomi 12 is said to, and is widely regarded to be a better device. The Galaxy S22+ in its 8/128 GB form is cheaper than the Xiaomi 12 Pro as well, at €1,049. If these prices are true, Xiaomi would be ditching its price-to-performance roots in the flagship space, especially as the Mi 11 launched at €749 a year ago.
The Xiaomi 12X will launch globally as the runt of the litter, and is tipped to start at €649. The jump to 256 GB of storage will cost an extra €50. That's a €200 discount versus the Xiaomi 12, with the only difference being a Snapdragon 870 compared to the more expensive phone's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. While the Snapdragon 870 remains a capable, premium chipset, it's unlikely that buyers will be thrilled at the prospect of shelling out €649 for the hardware the Xiaomi 12X offers.
Xiaomi has a history of launching phones at lower prices than leaks tout, though, so the possibility of fans seeing more acceptable prices when the phone debut globally on March 15 remains. Here's hoping.
