Sony has one of the worst reputations among Android OEMs for delivering timely updates to its Xperia smartphones. The same applies to its ongoing software support, even for this year's Xperia 1 VI. For context, Google and Samsung are now promising seven year's worth of Android updates.
By contrast, Sony will provide three OS updates to the Xperia 1 VI, up from two OS updates for its predecessor. Recently though, Sony added Wi-Fi 7 connectivity to its latest flagship, which is unusual for any smartphone manufacturer, let alone one with such a poor record as Sony. Seemingly, this improvement was a sign of things to come for the Xperia 1 VI rather than an aberration.
Although the company has not publicly announced as much yet, it has officially released Android 15 for the Xperia 1 VI (curr. $1,059.99 on Amazon) with the November 1 2024 security patch. With that being said, XperiCheck suggests that Sony has only delivered Android 15 to a single Xperia 1 VI variant, XQ-EC54.
Thus, the update is currently exclusive to the UK. For reference, Android 15 should reach other variants eventually as 69.1.A.2.78, which is a sub-1 GB over-the-air (OTA) download. Please see the image below and Sony's website for more details.
