The RED Hydrogen One goes on sale November 2 for US $1300

It’s been a long time coming, but the RED Hydrogen One will finally be available for purchase this Friday, November 2nd. The phone will sell for US $1295 at Verizon and AT&T, who will both offer the device on a monthly payment plan schedule.

Keen eyed readers will notice the price tag is $100 higher than when the phone was announced last year. Buyers that pre-ordered the device will get a small discount in that regard, but considering the phone has been delayed and delayed again, those that pre-ordered the Hydrogen One have earned any price cut they can get.

Because of its numerous delays, the Hydrogen One looks a bit outdated on paper. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, which was used in 2017 flagship phones, beats at the heart of the device. That said, the Hydrogen One is less about specs and more about features. The leading gimmick of the Hydrogen One is its “holographic screen,” but early impressions have largely fallen flat. The phone is also designed to integrate with many of RED’s high-end camera systems and has a connection port for possible support of future RED products.

All in all, $1300 is a lot to ask for a niche phone running older hardware. If its feature set is as gimmicky as initial impressions are touting, the RED Hydrogen One may be dead on arrival. Considering the phone is billed as the dream handset for cinematographers, it will be fighting an uphill battle against the excellent camera systems of the Pixel 3 and iPhone XS. The Hydrogen One’s $1300 makes that hill even steeper.

The RED Hydrogen One will go on sale November 2nd at AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
