The Moto Z2 Play may finally have an update to Android 9.0 (Pie). However, this story is based on a forum post from a total of 1 user so far. Then again, this individual has supplied a number of screenshots that look convincingly like those for a new upgrade for this brand.

Motorola's Moto line-up was once a safe bet for appreciable hardware assured of regular Android updates. However, this reputation has been dropping off as of late. This could also be said of the prominence of the brand, the last of which to be heard was the possibility of an upcoming successor to the G7 or one of its variants. Nevertheless, the older Z2 line was included in a long list of devices that were to get upgrades to Android 9.0, the second-newest version of this OS.

They included the Z2 Play, a milder variant of the more premium Z2 Force. Despite being only 2 years old, the latter was let down somewhat by its OEM in that its own 9.0 (or Pie) update was suspended shortly after its initial roll-out. However, there is a promising piece of evidence that the Z2 Play might escape this same fate.

The XDA forums user ajaikumarnadar, who apparently owns this phone, claims to have encountered an OTA notification to download Pie for the Z2 Play. Judging by the screenshots attached to the new thread on this subject, it is for the Brazilian-market units of this device. However, their poster asserts that their Indian counterparts should follow from next week (September 30-October 7, 2019).

Android 9.0 for the Moto Z2 Play should behave in a similar enough way to that for other phones of the same line, and also perhaps to that for some Motorola One variants. Then again, the XDA forum post alleging the same has not been corroborated or replicated in relevant parts of this site. Therefore, it's possible that the original report was fake; however, other explanations, the most plausible of which is that so many Z2 Play units are now rooted or have unlocked bootloaders that the OTA is having difficulty being applied to them.
