Huawei is expected to launch a successor to the Mate 40 Pro - and has been for some time, although the latest word is that it will debut in 2022 following an entire 2021 of postponements and delays. According to Digital Chat Station, that may just have been as well, as the phablet now has a better chance of having variants with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC as well as the Kirin 9000.
On the other hand, the former might be a 4G/LTE-only version of the flagship silicon, possibly known as the SM8425. Meanwhile, another Weibo-based leaker, 8090 Digital Beauty, claims to have some new insight as to the display to be driven by this silicon.
The tipster has allegedly come across a screen protector made for the Huawei Mate 50 Pro in the wild. Going by its appearance, it will have the waterfall-style display associated with many of its forebears. However, rather than a double punch-hole as in the 40 Pro, its sensor cut-out will be a throwback to older generations in its dimensions and appearance.
In fact, the notch potentially outlined in this new leak is so large it looks most like that of the iPhone 13 series, the only flagship smartphone to stick with such a notch in 2022. However, whether Huawei has truly chosen to mimic it in the Mate 50 Pro remains to be seen.
