The Mate phones are Huawei's business-centric flagships and have generally been the first phones to showcase the company's newest technologies for each generation. Over the past few years, the Mate devices have been released around October, but things could change this year.
Generally, Huawei releases three Mate phones. A regular model, a Pro model, and a Lite model. The same format is used with the P-series phones. The Lite version is usually released a month or so before the main flagships and is rebadged as a Huawei Maimang series phone in China.
This year, however, we're set to get the Maimang 8 way earlier than normal. The Maimang 6 and Maimang 7 were both Chinese variants of the Mate 10 and Mate 20 Lite phones respectively and were launched in September. However, the Maimang 8 is said to be set to launch this month. Today, in fact. Three months before the traditional release time.
It's not much but it could be a sign that Huawei plans to release the Mate 30 phones ahead of schedule. There have been a number of leaks on the phones, and word on the grapevine claims the next-gen Kirin 985 is already ready. Huawei's recent troubles with the US government also make the company's plans a tad hard to predict.
We'll have to wait and see.
