Earlier this year, a Counter-Strike 1.6 remake called CS: Legacy was announced. It would recreate Valve's genre-defining shooter in Source Engine with a healthy mix of original and new materials. The game was slated to enter early access sometime in 2025. However, it may have to be pushed back to 2026, or worse, not launch at all.
In a lengthy X post, the developers behind CS: Legacy explain that they have encountered some legal issues with Valve, which has taken issue with the use of its IP and assets. It doesn't necessarily mean the project is cancelled outright, but its development might get pushed back if the ambiguity around Valve's terms of service isn't resolved. The team states that it is ready to make all the necessary changes to comply with Valve's policies.
Should Valve shutter development outright, we still might see CS: Legacy, but as an entirely different game with a yet-to-be-determined name. It will feature, "Quake-style movement, tight gunplay, and strong wallbangs" and " A strong, unique 90s action movie visual identity and lore". It is too early to determine if it will be an arena shooter like Quake, but it would definitely be welcome because the genre is in desperate need of a revival.
