While the free Full Self-Driving (FSD) option transfer has become somewhat of a running promo for Tesla, it will be no more. Tesla could also introduce a multi-tier FSD subscription price model that differs for HW3 vehicles and those on unsupervised FSD.

Tesla's popular free FSD transfer promo will be impossible after February 14, according to Elon Musk, who had otherwise been rather accepting of the deal lately.

Previously, those Model Y owners who had purchased FSD outright at its various pricing through the years (currently $8,000) were able to take Tesla's most coveted feature option to their new Model Y or other Tesla vehicle.

The free FSD transfer had become somewhat of a running deal, as Tesla kept extending its duration, with only a quarter or two in the past two years when it was not available as a purchase incentive.

Tesla FSD sale end date

Instead of charging $8,000 for the FSD option, Tesla will stop selling it altogether on February 15. The only means to acquire FSD for current and future Tesla owners who don't have it purchased as an extra feature will be to subscribe and pay Tesla's asking fee each month.

Currently, an FSD subscription costs $99/month, or it would've taken those who purchased it outright about eight years to recoup their investment, or roughly the lifespan of their Model Y. They, however, could've then shifted it to a new Model Y with the respective free transfer deal, or whatever Tesla offers at the time, and kept using it for the foreseeable future without paying a dime extra.

Needless to say, this would be less than desired for Tesla, whose vehicle sales are dropping, and it will have to find revenue anywhere it can in a rather soft EV market. Moreover, Tesla is readying to release the unsupervised FSD version that its robotaxis run on to the public as an OTA update. This would allow 2026 Model Y owners to add their own vehicles to its Robotaxi ride-share platform fleet at will, for instance, and earn money when they don't need their cars.

FSD subscription price tiers

This extra revenue perspective would undoubtedly be exciting for many a Tesla vehicle owner, but not a good deal for Tesla if they had purchased FSD outright and can keep using it for many years. After February 14, those new Model Y owners who would be willing to lend their vehicle to the Robotaxi fleet will not only have to shell out for an FSD (Unsupervised) monthly or yearly subscription but also pay Tesla about 20% of their revenue for maintaining the ride-share platform and providing the payment methods. In other words, Tesla will stop selling FSD 14 just in time for its Robotaxi platform release to the public to pad its revenue with the most lucrative subscription-only payment model.

It remains to be seen whether the monthly FSD fee will remain the same or whether Tesla will introduce a multi-tier subscription model. There could be one price for the upcoming neutered FSD 14 Lite for HW3 vehicles, and another for the full-fledged FSD on newer Teslas with HW4 kits. Those who don't wish to add their vehicles to the Robotaxi platform could remain on a cheaper FSD (Supervised) branch of the software, while those who will be earning extra money as robotaxis might have to pay more for the unsupervised version, and so on.
