Tesla offers free FSD instead of cash credit for referrals but keeps the loyalty discounts

Tesla has updated the terms of its Refer and Earn program to replace direct cash credit discounts for its most popular vehicles, like the Model Y or the Model 3. The loyalty bonuses still stay as is, though, including the $500 credit off a new Model Y purchase.

Tesla is now giving away three full months of the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) option if buyers get the new Model Y, a Model 3, Model S/X, or a Cybertruck with a referral link.

Alternatively, friends and family or any random buyer that are sent a referral link can receive $400 off their solar project executed with Tesla gear. The referrer, however, now only gets $250 in Tesla credits that can be applied to its products or services, instead of $500 as before.

Previously, Tesla gave $1,000 off its vehicles or services to those buying with a referral link. Now that it is trying to introduce as many people to its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature as it can to amass data and raise its popularity, it did a referral bonus switcheroo.

Tesla will be launching the unsupervised FSD version this June in Austin, Texas, and the pilot will be a testing ground for its upcoming robotaxi platform. The more people it hooks up to drive on FSD, the more potential cars on the platform when it gets opened to vehicles that are not Tesla-owned and operated.

This is supposed to happen early in 2026, while Tesla will now start the unsupervised FSD testing with a fleet of its own Model Y and Model 3 cars, as well as with the Cybertruck that just got released in its cheapest RWD trim. The fleet will later be augmented with the Cybercab, if and when it gets the necessary permits to drive on public roads.

For now, however, Tesla is not touching the loyalty discount for its vehicles that still goes up to $1,000 if one buys a Model S or Model X with the same account after owning another Tesla vehicle, or if they get a Cybertruck.

Those who purchase the new Model Y and have previously owned a Tesla will get a $500 loyalty discount, though, and the same goes for Model 3 buyers.
