Tesla drops FSD price to $49/month as Autopilot demise compensation

After third-party insurance companies started to cut their premiums for Tesla owners who let FSD in the driver's seat, Tesla is now cutting the monthly subscription fee, too. The move comes after Tesla removed Autopilot from its options roster.

Tesla is compensating those who purchased the so-called Enhanced Autopilot and were given the chance to upgrade to FSD for two grand with a 50% monthly subscription fee cut.

The move comes after it decided to make its self-driving software a subscription-only option and nix its long-running free Autopilot feature to make people pay for any sort of driver-assist service more advanced than a basic TACC (Traffic-Aware Cruise Control).

Monthly FSD subscription price

After Tesla removed Autopilot from its free options list, it realized that there are people who paid for EAP, the Enhanced version of its basic driver-assist software.

Beside Autosteer and TACC that both used to come standard, EAP also adds the Navigate-on-Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Summon, and Autopark features, too. EAP buyers were given the option to upgrade to full-featured FSD for $2,000, or, alternatively, can now become monthly FSD subscribers at half price.

The FSD subscription price drops to $49/month instead of the usual $99 for them, a monthly fee that would turn many a Tesla owner into an FSD user if available to all. If this subcription-only, Autopilot-deprived sales model to herd Tesla owners into paying a monthly fee for any meaningful driver-assist service doesn't look confusing enough, Tesla is preparing to introduce additional price tiers.

Musk went on record saying that people will have to pay a higher FSD subcription fee if they want to use the unsupervised branch of the software that its Model Y robotaxis currently run on. The branch differs from the FSD (Supervised) version available to Tesla owners in that it doesn't need a human reaction, so passengers can do something else with their time than drive.

It won't, however, be available for HW3 vehicles with the old set of FSD computer and camera. For them, Tesla is expected to introduce something like an FSD 14 Lite that will be deprived of certain unsupervised features. To wit, Tesla may introduce a multi-tier FSD pricing system to correct for all of its different driver-assist hardware, purchase, and subscription options introduced through the years.

There might be one basic $49/month price for owners of older Tesla vehicles with HW3 kits. Those with newer 2026 Model Y units may have an option to either pay $99/month for FSD (Supervised) or, potentially, $199/month for unsupervised FSD that would allow them to add their vehicles to Tesla's Robotaxi platform, or simply to rest during longer trips instead of driving.

Tesla is apparently preparing to tout future FSD subscription revenue to convince investors that its lofty stock valuation can continue while its sales are dropping and it remains to be seen how high it will price the unsupervised branch of its FSD software.
