SpaceX expands free Starlink Mini rental offer to more US residential users

SpaceX appears to be expanding access to one of its hardware perks by offering a free Starlink Mini rental dish to a broader segment of its residential satellite internet subscribers in the US. Previously restricted to customers on the top-tier Residential Max plan, promotional emails inviting users to claim a free Mini unit have recently been sent to subscribers on lower-tier plans, including the standard Residential 100Mbps tier.

The hardware typically costs between $199 and $249 to purchase outright, making the rental option a notable incentive for existing home internet customers.

Starlink's official support documentation has also been updated to reflect this change. The terms for the "Optional Mini Kit for Travel" now state that any customer with an active Residential plan is eligible, removing the prior requirement for the higher-tier plan. To use the portable dish, subscribers must pair it with a secondary Starlink Roam service plan.

While top-tier Residential Max users receive a 50 percent discount on their Roam plan, lower-tier subscribers are offered a 20 percent discount, with rates adjusting dynamically if a customer changes their primary home service plan.

The decision to distribute free hardware rentals may be aimed at clearing out existing inventory ahead of an upcoming hardware refresh. SpaceX has previously teased a second-generation Starlink Mini dish, which is expected to sport a thinner form factor and feature an integrated battery. While official pricing and release dates for the updated model have not yet been disclosed, the current promotion gives standard residential users a low-barrier way to add portable satellite internet to their service.
