Starlink removes 5 TB data throttling penalty for offending users

SpaceX has once again reversed course on Starlink data restrictions, lifting a newly introduced speed cap after a wave of user complaints.

Recently, the company began to quietly throttle residential customers who consumed unusually large amounts of data with a cap seemingly set at 5 TB monthly and 500 GB daily downloads. They saw their speeds fall down to around 10 Mbps, despite their plans being advertised as "unlimited." Some of the affected users reported months of steady, heavy usage suddenly triggering a "Terms of Service Violation" notice, followed by speeds too slow for basic browsing.

The backlash, however, has been equally swift and surprising, as the threads on Reddit's Starlink community filled with people ranting about the move. Some Starlink customers reported having their full speeds reinstated after contacting support directly, so it seems that speed throttling was inconsistently applied and not something SpaceX wanted to stand firmly behind once it drew attention.

This is not the first time Starlink has flip-flopped on data limits. Back in 2022, SpaceX announced a Fair Use Policy that would have capped residential customers at 1 TB of high-speed data per month. That policy was delayed three separate times, first from December 2022 to February 2023, then to April 2023, before SpaceX scrapped the cap entirely in May 2023 and introduced unlimited "Standard" data instead. It later tried a hard cap on its pricier Priority tier, throttling overage users down to just 1 Mbps, a move that also drew criticism.

Starlink's pattern fits a familiar tech industry playbook where a restriction is introduced in the fine Terms of Service print until it causes severe backlash and publicity, followed by a retreat on an individual basis only to come up with some new form of "unlimited" usage restrictions.
