Sony has confirmed plans to start upgrading some of its product stack to Android 13, Google's latest OS update. For context, Google has already released Android 13-based updates for its Pixel smartphones, while Samsung has kicked off its equivalent rollout with the Galaxy S22 series. With that being said, Sony will still be one of the first Android OEMs to begin issuing Android 13 updates.
In a Facebook post, Sony outlines that its 'introducing the Android 13 update', leading some outlets to report that the process has already begun. However, an intrepid Redditor with the username u/Baraja has determined that is not the case. In fact, XperiCheck confirms that Sony has not issued an Android 13-based build to any of its Xperia 1 IV or Xperia 5 IV update channels.
Reportedly, any Android 13 update for Sony smartphones will arrive with the firmware version '64.1'. In comparison, all recent Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV updates carry older firmware, v64.0. If Sony's Android 13 update is anything like its past Android 12 updates, then it will stick close to the AOSP version of Android and not the UI Google offers with its Pixel series. Still, the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 5 IV should receive all core Android 13 features, such as improved Material You customisation options and per-app language options, among other changes.
