The Sony IMX966 is now projected to debut soon in order to become the new main camera for smartphones powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It is said to have sought-after features, OIS included. The combination might be further bolstered by a new, high-res zoom lens from OmniVision for maximum effect.

Sony's top-end mobile image sensor line-up is slated to become overrun by new LYTIA variants soon; however, according to Digital Chat Station, the IMX series might have at least 1 more on-trend 50MP module left in reserve.

Despite the similarity in its name to that of the line's current flagship, the IMX966 might not have that all-important 1-inch footprint. In fact, with dimensions of about 1/1.4 inches, it might not be that much smaller than its IMX866 predecessor.

Furthermore, the putative newer model is not even believed to get the advanced new stacked structure - although it is said to have OIS, at least. Nevertheless, the IMX966 is backed to become the new go-to main sensor for OEMs wishing to make their next Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered Android smartphone.

Moreover, the IMX966 might be joined in those devices by a "3X dark-light periscope" back-up camera based on the 64MP OmniVision OV64B sensor. This unusually high-res telephoto lens is rumored to debut in a successor to the iQOO 11 Pro, a spec that might bolster high-speed charging, a premium display and top-end RAM quotients in that upcoming flagship.
