Seiko launches two new Alpinist mechanical GMT watches with 6R54 movement
Seiko has added two new colorways to its Alpinist Mechanical GMT line, and both are restricted to a distribution tier the brand reserves for its most dedicated customers. The HBC008J (blue) and HBC009J (black) release in Japan on September 11 at 155,100 yen (~$983) each, sold exclusively through Seiko's Global Brand Core Shop network, not general retail.
Both watches share the platform that international buyers know as the HBC007, the green-dialled Alpinist GMT Seiko brought to Western markets in June after keeping it as a Japan-only release (as the SBEJ005) for nearly three years. The case measures 39.5 mm across, 13.6 mm thick, and 46.4 mm lug-to-lug in stainless-steel with Diashield coating. They both run the automatic caliber 6R54 with a 72-hour power reserve and accuracy rated at +25 to -15 seconds a day.
The HBC008J has a radial-sunray blue dial with a silver case and hairline-finished 24-hour bezel. The HBC009J takes the same case in black. Both keep the Alpinist's signature wedge-shaped indices, add Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 for legibility, and use a red-tipped GMT hand for the second time zone. The internal rotating ring doubles up as a simplified compass, operated through the crown at 4 o'clock — a feature that goes back to the iconic 1959 Alpinist.
Other specs are essentially the same as the HBC007 platform: curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, 200 meters water resistance, antimagnetic construction, a screw-down crown and case back, and a 20 mm calfskin strap on a one-push triple-fold clasp. Both are made in Japan and carry Seiko's three-year warranty.
Neither is a limited edition. Given the HBC007's three-year run as a Japan exclusive before its international release, buyers outside Japan may be waiting a while (though Seiko hasn't said whether that pattern will repeat).
