Satechi has launched its latest USB-C dongle. But this one has a twist we haven’t seen before, featuring a built-in M.2 SSD enclosure.

Apple may have negated the imperative to buy dongles for their latest MacBook Pro models by re-fitting it with so-called legacy ports it previously cast aside, but that hasn’t stopped Satechi from increasing the appeal of its flagship dongle. It’s latest dongle has been dubbed the USB-C Hybrid Multiport Adapter and it is very much a hybrid device. Not only does the dongle contain a wide range of ports, but it also incorporates an M.2 SSD enclosure.

Satechi’s approach to its new dongle is similar to its recent Mac mini USB-C Hub which also includes a new M.2 SSD enclosure. Other than perhaps having to purchase a new M.2 SSD to fit in it, it will also need to be a SATA type, not the newer and faster NVMe models. Still, it will be much faster and more convenient than carrying around a portable external HDD.

In addition to sporting support for 4K 60 Hz over HDMI, the new Hybrid dongle also comes with 2x USB-A 3.0 ports (still missing from the new MacBook Pro models), and a USB-C PD port with support for up to 100 W of down stream charging. In addition to Apple’s MacBook Pro models, the Satechi Hybrid dongle supports several Microsoft Surface devices, Chromebooks, and other devices that support USB-C PD.

The new Satechi Hybrid Multiport Adapter comes in Space Gray and Black and is currently retailing for US$89.99 on Amazon for the black version.
