PCIe4 x4 M.2 drives are finally becoming more affordable after a whole first year of limited availability and options. The Samsung 980 Pro is one of the faster PCIe4 options out there which makes the new sale price that much attractive.
Allen Ngo,

B&H is currently running a sale on the 1 TB PCIe4 x4 Samsung drive for $80 USD off the original launch price of $229. The deal is notable as PCIe4 drives have been frequently sold out or priced above retail ever since they first became available at the start of 2021.

The Samsung drive in question promises sequential read and write speeds of up to 7000 MB/s and 5000 MB/s, respectively, to be two to three times faster than many PCIe3 solutions currently in the market. The drive is also compatible with the Sony Playstation 5 which only accepts a certain range of PCIe4 NVMe SSDs.

Because of how fast these drives can perform, however, it's highly recommend to pair the drive with an aluminum heat spreader or else performance may automatically throttle to keep temperatures in check. This is less of an issue if installing the drive on a desktop PC or Playstation 5 since these products can accommodate SSD heat spreaders. On the other hand, laptop users will want to be cautious as most models have limited SSD cooling.
