Horizon Forbidden West, one of the most anticipated PlayStation games of the year, has already convinced critics four days before its official release. While the game shines on PlayStation 5, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro hold their own at 1080p and 30 FPS.

Sony will release Horizon Forbidden West on Friday, the follow-up to Horizon Zero Dawn. However, press reviews for the upcoming triple-A title have already been published, including by The Washington Post. Currently, Horizon Forbidden West has a Metascore of 89/100 points, calculated from 103 reviews so far. So far, only four press reviews have awarded the game less than 75 points.

Based on the reviews published so far, Guerrilla Games is said to have expanded upon many of Horizon Zero Dawn's mechanics, such as its combat system. Likewise, Horizon Forbidden West has a broader story and characters than its predecessor, albeit without many groundbreaking gameplay elements. Still, The Washington Post remains 'mesmerised by the core gameplay loop' after more than 40 hours spent in Horizon Forbidden West.

Incidentally, ElAnalistaDeBits has outlined how the game compares across the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro and the PlayStation 5. Unsurprisingly, Horizon Forbidden West looks and plays best on the PlayStation 5. The performance difference between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro is dramatic, though. Specifically, the former delivers more washed out textures than the latter, while changes in its dynamic 1080p resolution are also more noticeable.

For some reason, the PlayStation 5 does not have drastically farther draw distances than its predecessors. Similarly, all three consoles peak at 30 FPS by default. The PlayStation 5's 'FPS Mode' targets 60 FPS, however. By contrast, the PlayStation 5's SSD lets it load Horizon Forbidden West considerably faster than on the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro. According to ElAnalistaDeBits, the PlayStation 5 loads over 6x faster than the PlayStation 4 and just under 5x faster than the PlayStation 4 Pro. In real terms, Sony's last-generation consoles will take over a minute to load Horizon Forbidden West, compared to 13 seconds for the PlayStation 5.
