Samsung has quietly announced the HW-Q930F, a new upper mid-range soundbar that serves as the understudy to the company’s flagship offering HW-Q990F. It succeeds last year’s HW-Q930D and, while it’s not reinventing the wheel, there are some notable upgrades here, including a revamped subwoofer and new sound enhancements.
By far the biggest change here is the new cubical subwoofer. Measuring 249.0 x 251.8 x 249.0 mm, this subwoofer is significantly more compact than Q930D’s, which is both taller and deeper (208.28 x 401.32 x 401.32mm). Samsung says the new design allows the subwoofer to more easily blend into living rooms and despite its smaller size it doesn’t compromise on performance. On the inside, the sub packs a 6.5-inch active driver along with an 8-inch passive radiator. The main soundbar and up-firing speakers are largely the same, so is the 9.1.4 channel configuration—9 primary forward-firing and side-firing channels, one dedicated subwoofer channel, and four up-firing (height) channels for object-based spatial sound, with 17 drivers spread across the system.
The rest of the feature set is largely unchanged from the previous model. You get support for all the major audio formats including Dolby Atmos, Wireless Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby 5.1-ch, Dolby True HD, and DTS-X. Samsung's room calibration feature, SpaceFit Sound Pro, is also onboard, utilizing the microphones on the soundbar and subwoofer to analyze room reverberations and optimize the speakers accordingly for the optimal sound and bass. Meanwhile, the Active Voice Amplifier Pro (AVA Pro) enhances dialogue clarity by detecting background noise and dynamically adjusting the audio to emphasize voices, ensuring you don't miss a word. There's also a new feature called Moderate Bass, which lets you enjoy nighttime movies without waking up the whole house by turning off the subwoofer, with the soundbar taking over bass duties.
Those hoping for an upgrade on the gaming front will be disappointed. Just like the last model, you only get a single HDMI 2.0 port and it tops out at 4K 60Hz. Other notable highlights include Q-Symphony support, Bluetooth 5.3, Roon service support, Spotify Connect, AirPlay, Chromecast, Samsung SmartThings companion app, and an Optical audio port.
