Samsung launches 200MP ISOCELL HPC sensor with DeepPix tech for better HDR and zoom

Samsung has officially launched the ISOCELL HPC, its newest 200MP smartphone camera sensor, built around a new pixel architecture the company calls DeepPix. It's Samsung's first sensor to use the technology, and the company is positioning it around three areas: HDR performance, zoom quality, and video capture.
DeepPix works through Front Deep Trench Isolation, a technique that expands both the photodiode capacity and the shared floating diffusion within each pixel. Samsung says this raises Full Well Capacity, the maximum amount of light-generated charge a pixel can hold, by 60 percent over the previous generation. In practice, that translates to better light collection, lower image noise, brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and a wider dynamic range in HDR shots.
The sensor also supports single-frame 16-bit HDR, which Samsung says can produce up to four times richer color than conventional HDR processing. Rather than merging multiple exposures the way most phone cameras handle HDR today, the ISOCELL HPC captures the full HDR range in one frame, which should help preserve natural color and fine detail in scenes with strong backlighting or harsh daylight. Video capabilities include 8K recording at 30fps, 4K at up to 180fps, and Full HD recording at 360fps, though the 360fps mode does not support autofocus.
A notable addition is HDR support that extends across multiple in-sensor zoom levels rather than being limited to a single focal length. The ISOCELL HPC applies single-frame HDR at 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x and 4x zoom, using intelligent in-sensor downscaling to keep image quality and dynamic range consistent as users zoom in, an area where many existing sensors fall off.
For the specs, the ISOCELL HPC uses a 1/1.3-inch optical format with 0.6-micrometer pixels and an effective resolution of 16,384 by 12,288 pixels. It pairs Samsung's Tetra2pixel color filter with Super QPD autofocus and Smart-ISO Pro HDR, and outputs RAW in 10-bit, 12-bit, 14-bit and 16-bit formats. Samsung has also added High Precision Microlens and High Transmittance ARL technologies, both aimed at directing more incoming light onto each photodiode while cutting down on internal reflections, which should further help color accuracy and clarity across different lighting conditions.
Samsung has not confirmed which phones will launch with the ISOCELL HPC first. Several Chinese flagship phones are expected in September, and the sensor could debut in either the Oppo Find X10 series or the Vivo X500 series, though neither company has confirmed its inclusion.
