Leak: Samsung Galaxy Aero smartwatch uses RTOS, could offer multi-week battery life

The Samsung Galaxy Watch9 ($379 on Amazon) has just hit the market, but the next Samsung Galaxy wearables are apparently already in the starting blocks. An FCC certification recently revealed the Samsung Galaxy Fit 4, which is likely to be positioned as a particularly affordable fitness tracker and an alternative to the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 and the Huawei Band 11.

Now, SamMobile has discovered references to another smartwatch in the code of the Samsung Wearable smartphone app. This watch is listed under the codename "Samsung Galaxy Aero," along with the code "galaxy_rtos_watch." This confirms that this smartwatch is not running Google Wear OS, but rather an RTOS-based operating system. Since there are currently dozens of RTOS versions in circulation, it is unclear whether Samsung is using an open-source system like FreeRTOS or developing a proprietary real-time operating system.

In any case, RTOS-based smartwatches generally achieve significantly longer battery life than watches running Google Wear OS, as the system requirements are much lower – a battery life of several weeks would be conceivable even with an AMOLED display. The brand-new Huawei Watch GT 7, for example, offers up to 21 days of battery life, compared to a maximum of two days for the Samsung Galaxy Watch9. So far, no further details are known about the features, launch date, or price of this Samsung Galaxy Aero smartwatch.
