Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G
If you don't want to part with a lot of money when purchasing a modern smartphone, then you may want to take a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G. For below $200, you'll get a 90-Hz, 6.7-inch OLED display, lots of storage, good connectivity options as well as Android updates until 2030.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 is a well-built budget phone with a fantastic display, long battery life, and future-proof software support. However, it lacks power, has mediocre cameras, and is missing essential features like stereo speakers and 4K video recording. For those who prioritise a long-lasting device with years of updates, it’s a solid pick. But if you want better performance and features for the same price, there are better options elsewhere.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 builds on the strengths of the A15 with a larger display, faster performance, greater durability, and equally good cameras—all without raising the price. It stands out even further from the competition thanks to Samsung’s long six-year software update commitment. The Moto G lasts a bit longer and performs similarly on performance benchmarks but otherwise falls behind the A16 in most other areas. Put simply, the Galaxy A16 is the best Android phone you can get for under $200, and that earns it our Editors' Choice award.

Samsung's Galaxy A16 5G doesn't revolutionize what it means to be a budget phone with new materials, an upgraded camera, or AI-powered features, but it delivers tons of value, backed by a flagship-grade update commitment that will see it supported for up to six years. It might not leap off the page, but this cheap Android phone is more than worth the money as a first phone or a long-term option for an older loved one.

Samsung makes it difficult for us tech journalists once again! For less than $200, the Galaxy A16 5G is a smartphone that is definitely worth recommending. This is attributed to the good display, the very good battery life, and the long update warranty of six years. If you want to primarily use your smartphone for surfing the web, making calls, and using apps such as Instagram or TikTok, you will be satisfied for half a dozen years. However, those who want a little more will soon be dissatisfied with the Galaxy A16 5G all too quickly. Even for this year, there is very little performance capability left by the processor. You can expect occasional stutters and long app loading times. It is simply annoying that Samsung has left out the 3.5 mm audio port and carried over the rather poor camera setup from last year. The Galaxy A16 5G remains a purchase recommendation—but with severe limitations!

The Galaxy A16 5G comes in around $200, so realistic expectations are key. And in many ways, it surpasses those expectations. The display is gorgeous and now larger, battery life is solid, and the camera boasts improved video recording. Plus, Samsung promises six years of software updates—an exceptional commitment for a budget-friendly device. However, performance remains a sticking point. The A16 5G still feels sluggish and stuttery at times, a significant drawback that quickly becomes frustrating when scrolling through social media or attempting any gaming. While it might suffice for users who prioritize other features, those who value a fast and smooth experience may find themselves looking elsewhere.

At this relatively affordable price point, you shouldn’t ask for too much from the Moto G75. But too much is exactly what you get here. Too many different features, at the expense of the quality of the most important ones. Apart from acceptable performance, most basic features such as screen, camera and battery leave something to be desired. If Motorola had thrown out wireless charging and the headphones and offered a better and more energy-efficient OLED screen instead, it would have been better. However, in its current form, I can’t recommend it.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is another adequate cheap phone from Samsung, offering an appealing design and a punchy AMOLED display for just under £200. Not much progress has been made on the Galaxy A15 5G, with similarly sluggish performance and the same middling camera set-up. One big improvement is Samsung’s vastly improved software update promise. Conversely, battery life doesn’t appear to be quite as strong as before, particularly when it comes to sustained usage. All in all, the Galaxy A16 5G is a perfectly acceptable cheap phone. However, you’ll find much better value by either spending a little more money or looking around for a discount and spending more wisely.

With a starting price of $250/Rs. 18,999 (8GB/ 128 GB), the Samsung Galaxy A16 comes across as a smartphone that is a good daily driver but is not a phone that will wow you in any one department – a jack of all trades, but master of none. Its performance is satisfactory in most zones, making it a solid, dependable smartphone. And it needs to be dependable, for it is surrounded by very fierce competitors. The Poco X6 offers power-packed specs; it has a better processor, better refresh rate, stereo speakers, more megapixel numbers, and faster charging support. The CMF Phone (1) not only has a distinct design but also comes with 120 Hz refresh rate, clean UI, faster processor, and slightly faster charging speed support.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G resembles one of the company's most expensive smartphones, and it subjectively looks more “premium” than the competition. It is easy to hold, and it has a bright display. The handset also has a large battery, which delivers ample battery backup at a single charge. You also get six years of software updates — this is good, but only if the smartphone remains snappy enough for as many years. The presence of the Dimensity 6300 chipset and the lacklustre ultrawide camera are two factors holding this smartphone back. There are a handful of other smartphones under the Rs. 20,000 mark that offer arguably better performance than the Galaxy A16 5G, including the OnePlus Nord CE 4 Lite (Review), the Infinix Note 40 5G (Review), and the Moto G85 (Review).

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G offers a good mix of software and hardware under a price tag of Rs.20,000. With six years of OS updates, the Samsung Galaxy A16 is perfect for those looking for long-term support. You get a great display, decent cameras and a long-lasting battery backup. But you will need to contend with an average processor, teardrop notch and lack of 4K video recording, which are standard specs at this price. If you want a better Samsung phone, you can consider options like the Samsung Galaxy A34 5G from last year. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy M35 5G is available at a cheaper price. Both phones offer much better displays, performance, batteries and cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is a capable yet unambitious addition to the brand’s lineup, catering to users seeking essential functionality rather than standout features. Its understated design, lightweight build, and IP54 rating ensure a practical daily companion, while the Dimensity 6300 chipset delivers smooth performance for basic tasks. However, the display’s 90 Hz refresh rate and moderate brightness levels feel underwhelming in a competitive market. While its 50 MP camera impresses in daylight, low-light struggles and limited video capabilities reveal its budget nature. Battery performance is adequate but falls short of expectations, given the efficient hardware. At ₹18,999, it faces stiff competition from better-rounded options like the Motorola G85 and OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite.

Samsung Galaxy A16 5G looks like an appealing deal for those who want extended software support with a feature-rich experience and a long runtime. Apart from that, the Galaxy A16 5G doesn't quite impress when it comes to power, as the processor is significantly inferior compared to competition. While the cameras are decent, there are some performance hiccups that could disturb your daily usage.

The Galaxy A16 5G is roughly a $200 phone and we cannot expect too much. In some areas, it beats our expectations. It's got a gorgeous and now bigger display, decent battery life and a camera that can now record better video. It also has six years of software updates, a rarity for such dirt cheap phone. But unfortunately it still feels a bit too slow and stuttery, and this is a major red flag. This quickly gets annoying when you scroll around social media and the phone has not improved its GPU and gaming performance at all since last year. It will get the job done for some users who don't care too much about performance, but if you value a fast and smooth phones, there might be better options around. Keep an eye on our best budget phones lineup for the latest in that space.

Samsung is not shaking things up but is instead following a familiar formula with the Galaxy A16 5G. They've got the basics right and they've added 6 years of OS updates to spice things up. The Galaxy A16 5G is a nicely constructed device covering most bases. We particularly like Samsung's fairly new commitment to up to six major Android upgrades on modest devices. Undoubtedly, there is a lot to love about One UI and all of the added features it offers. However, the Galaxy A16 5G seems to be behind the times in more ways than one. Samsung just isn't packing in that budget value like many other competitors. For example, the phone is only IP54 rated, it lacks stereo speakers, and its display, while not bad in any way, only has a 90Hz refresh rate and pretty modest maximum brightness. The Exynos 1330 chipset that we tested offers modest performance at best.

73.44%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
