And that’s where the rubber meets the road on this Chromebook and others like it. Back when an affordable Chromebook meant cheap hardware paired with painfully-slow processors, it was so very difficult to recommend anyone go buy them. Schools did so and I’m certain that older, cheaper Chromebooks have done some damage to the perceptions of what it is like to use a Chromebook at this point in 2020. But as we’re now getting low-cost processors that are capable of real work without falling all over themselves, it feels like the ideal, affordable Chromebook experience is finally coming into focus. We’re not fully there, yet, but we’re coming around.

At the end of the day, the verdict on the Samsung Chromebook 4 Plus comes down to its low price. While the MSRP of this Chromebook starts at $300 — and you can often find it retailing at $250 or closer to $200 — it’s still a better option for most than Windows laptops at the price, especially if you want a large screen. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, there are several great options available, especially the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 ($429), which often hovers close to $300, and the last-gen (2020) model Acer Chromebook Spin 713 ($629), which now goes as low as ~$330. However, these are still significantly higher price than the $200-250 you can get the Samsung Chromebook 4 Plus for. So, should you buy the Samsung Chromebook 4 Plus? If you’re on a tight budget and need a Chromebook for a young student, or a secondary device for home use, then yes. Even two years later, the Samsung Chromebook 4 Plus provides solid value for the price. If you can stretch your budget, however, there are many other options out there that elevate the Chrome OS experience.

For those who insist on a 15.6-inch screen, the Acer Chromebook 315's is better—it's definitely economy class, but it's a touch panel with clearer IPS rather than TN technology—and its slightly slower AMD processor is offset by more storage and a price currently $50 below the Samsung's.

The Samsung Chromebook 4 gets the job done, but in the manner of a space-saver spare tire instead of a high-performance radial. If you can afford a higher-priced and better-equipped laptop, you'll have a much more enjoyable ride.
