RakuOS 2026.04.15 sports the COSMIC desktop on top of Fedora 43

One of the Hybrid Atomic Linux distros built on Fedora that brings together an immutable, read-only base and the full package flexibility of a traditional distro, RakuOS is moving forward with a new update. According to the official announcement, version 2026.04.15 is a major release and also the final one based on Fedora 43. With this update, RakuOS gets a new ISO, which features the COSMIC desktop, and the live ISO image also gets to provide a whole new user experience, which is now powered by the Anaconda Web UI and installs the full bootc-based image without the need of an internet connection.
In addition to the above, RakuOS Linux 2026.04.15 also packs the following highlights:
- Availability of main(Stable) and staging(Testing) branches from now on.
- Improved transparency during boot and system operations thanks to descriptive Plymouth messages.
- RakuOS Software has been completely rewritten in Rust, being much faster and easier to maintain than the previous Python implementation.
- In addition to the above, RakuOS Welcome has also received a full Rust code rewrite.
- Improved defaults, including dark mode, blur effects, and an always-visible dock in the GNOME Edition.
While existing users can get the update via the usual image update process, those who are now entering the RakuOS world or just want to do a clean install for any reason can get the ISOs from here.
RakuOS Linux will work fine on any 64-bit processor made in the last 6 years but also needs 8/40 GB of memory/storage, as well as an FHD display. A budget laptop like the Dell DC15250, which is currently available for $599 on Amazon, should run this distro just fine.
