Power bank maker Romoss dismisses bankruptcy rumors after certifications get withdrawn over quality issues
The power bank industry in China has been tumultuous over the past few weeks, with major players like Anker issuing recalls for several models due to safety risks, and the Chinese government banning power banks manufactured before 2024 from flights. Romoss, another big name in the sector, appears to have been hit harder than most.
Following reports of bankruptcy and a potential closure, Romoss has issued an official statement seemingly debunking those rumors, and indicating it has no plans to quit the power bank business. Taking to its Weibo handle yesterday, the company shared:
We are not closed down, thank you for your concern. We will definitely try our best to solve all problems of all friends, users and partners.
While that seems clear-cut, the reality of the situation may be different. According to reports from Chinese media, Romoss—known for its affordable power bank offerings—has had most of its certifications withdrawn by 3C (China Compulsory Certification), allegedly due to quality issues. Seeing as electronics cannot be sold in China without 3C certification, that may well prove fatal for Romoss, fueling the aforementioned bankruptcy reports.
Reportedly, Romoss has cleared out most of its stock on its e-commerce stores in China, leaving only accessories like charging cables available for purchase—effectively, models unaffected by the withdrawn 3C certifications.
