It appears fans are starting to suffer from frayed nerves thanks to the suspenseful dishes Sony is serving up in regard to the PS5. Since the hardware reveal in June, the Japanese company has been pretty tight-lipped about its next-gen console, to the point where the pre-order date, price, UI, and even the ports on the rear of the hardware are still secrets. Fortunately for devoted PS5 watchers, there have been some reports of sightings of Sony’s mythical beast, but in the end they both ended up being wolves in sheep’s clothing…
For starters, How It Works magazine printed a great spread of what appeared to be the inside of the PS5. So the white wings are off and there’s an exploded view of two huge fans, a sizable heat-sink to deal with the powerful custom AMD CPU and GPU, the console’s motherboard, and of course, the legendary 825 GB SSD tucked in neatly toward the bottom. It’s an incredible sight and seems like an amazing scoop at first…until some detective types on the internet reveal that the motherboard on show actually comes from a PS3 Slim and that this is clearly a concept image combined with some factlets and dashes of rumor.
However, disappointed PS5 fans were soon reinvigorated by what seemed to be a sneaky appearance of the console in a Twitch stream for the Chat’s Choice Awards. Behind one of the hosts (YouTuber Mari Takihashi) was what looked like a PS5 console sitting on a table minding its own business. Of course, this news was soon spread around social media, with expectant gamers waiting for some sort of reveal…which happened when the “PS5” was sliced with a big knife (see images below). It was simply another case of the cake being a lie.
With September 9 just around the corner, many will be hoping that the numerous commenters that have plumped for that date as signifying something special in the PS5 universe are right. There have been some signs and rumors that Sony might actually be preparing for a mind-blowing reveal, but there are also many that believe the company is engaged in a high-stakes game of chicken with Microsoft over next-gen console pricing.
