After much anticipation, Sony has officially unveiled its long-awaited successor to the PS4 series of gaming consoles. The new PS5 series features a futuristic looking design and will come in two variants, one with a traditional optical disc drive and the other in a ‘Digital Edition’.

The hype has been building for months now, but Sony has delivered in spades with the official unveiling of the new PlayStation 5, or PS5 series of consoles. There will be two models available, both with a futuristic looking design with one featuring a traditional optical disc drive and the second, a ‘Digital Edition’, which is targeted at gamers happy to download games. While we expect that the Digital Edition will retail at a lower price point, Sony is still to reveal the pricing of either PS5 model.

Alongside the launch of the PS5 console, Sony also revealed a new DualSense charging station for the previously revealed DualSense controller along with a new and more compact HD camera, a Pulse 3D wireless gaming headset and a media remote control – notably, there was no mention of a new PS VR headset. The company also highlighted some of the next-gen game titles coming to the console including the all-new Gran Turismo 7, a PlayStation staple, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Sackboy A Big Adventure.

The system architecture was revealed back in March, but to recap, it will be powered by a custom AMD Zen 2 octa-core CPU with integrated AMD RDNA 2 graphics. This will be good for producing 10.28 teraflops of precision floating point performance, which is less powerful than the similarly architected Xbox Series One X console. However, the PS5 also features proprietary SSD storage that is considerably faster than the Xbox Series X that could help to offset some of the systems shortcomings in terms of raw processing power.
