Philips 45B1U6900C SuperWide monitor reviewed: 32:9 is rather useful
When working with a conventional 16:9 aspect ratio, users often need to set up multiple monitors so that they can keep an eye on several windows without having to switch between them. Besides productivity, very wide monitors are also really great for gaming because they provide a much more immersive experience.
A while back, we reviewed the 34-inch Philips Evnia UltraWide monitor with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Now we are going even wider and managed to get our hands on the 45-inch Philips 45B1U6900C SuperWide monitor for testing purposes. Using the display is practically like having two 27-inch monitors side by side. Productivity-focused extra-wide models also tend to come with added features such as a KVM switch, a USB hub and PIP (picture-in-picture). And all these can be found on the 45-inch Philips monitor.
Due to its sheer width, the monitor is curved (1500R) so that it gently wraps around the user. This enhances the level of immersion when you are watching films or gaming as well as helps keep the distance between your eyes and the screen more constant than with typical flat monitors.
Unlike the Evnia, which sports an OLED panel, the 32:9 Philips 45B1U6900C still uses VA technology, and this is something you'll notice. Especially right out of the box, images are going to look considerably more washed out. However, this is partly because the monitor is not factory-calibrated. Calibrating the display (using our i1Pro3 spectrophotometer and the Calman software) resulted in substantial improvements. You can find the ICC profile created by us and in-depth information about the monitor in our hands-on review of the Philips 45B1U6900C.
