Panasonic gets in on the neck-mounted speaker game with the SoundSlayer WIGSS
Panasonic has arrived at Gamescom 2021 to present an accessory type also done by a handful of other OEMs such as Sony thus far. This new device, the SoundSlayer Wearable Immersive Gaming Speaker System (WIGSS) is the latest addition to a series that also comprises the more conventional SC-HTB01 soundbar.
Like that companion speaker, the SoundSlayer WIGSS is the result of a partnership with SQUARE ENIX that results in automatic optimizations should the user fire up the title FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. However, this newer device packs "4-channel full-range speakers" into its almost torc-like form-factor so that the user can wear them around the neck during gameplay.
The SoundSlayer WIGSS internals are also rated for original processing technologies, True MAGESS (Majestic Augmented Gaming Environment Sound System) included. Panasonic also claims that its design confers "realistic surround sound" for more immersive gaming.
The new 4W wearable speaker can be used with the PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/S/X or Nintendo Switch via a cable with a 3.5mm jack, or with the Switch via USB. It is also compatible with PCs via either port.
Accordingly, Panasonic, like others also now in this genre, asserts that wearable speakers are an ideal alternative to headphones as they do not come with the risk of head, scalp or ear discomfort over time.
The SoundSlayer WIGSS' design is apparently based on ergonomics research based on "human body data analysis" to enhance wearer comfort. On the other hand, it is 244 grams (g) in total. Panasonic has yet to release pricing or availability data for the new device as yet.
